Being a 'Freelance' Makeup Artist

Instagram vs real life.

As makeup has become such a huge and uproaring community in the last year, I want to share some things with you that you should think about before becoming a makeup artist.

A lot of people think that to become a makeup artist is to create the “perfect” cat eye or blended-out shadows. It’s way more complex than that. Everything you see on Instagram isn’t really what it seems. The real life of a makeup artist is much more complex and much more than just a photo or video uploaded to Instagram. Here’s just a few points on what you should consider before going into this career path.

Firstly, you should know proper hygiene. Cleaning your brushes after every use, showing your clients you are clean and sanitary by using hand sanitizer or washing your hands frequently, making sure your products are cleaned and sanitized properly after every use with each client, and also making sure your clients are comfortable and trust you. It takes more than just posting looks online and boasting about how great you are at applying foundation and colours. You have to show that you care about your clients and that you don’t want to spread germs or bacteria to your clients.

Secondly, you should have some knowledge and background on your craft. Going to school I know can be expensive and not everyone can afford it. But, in the long run, it gives you the longer end of the stick. Even if you go for a small degree, to learn and gain knowledge of exactly what you are doing would put you ahead of the game. Again, not everyone can afford that, and it’s okay. You can also do your own research and see if there are small classes that you can take with someone who has their license to learn and gain that experience without spending a lot of money. It will help you build your business but also that trust you need for your clients to hire you and spread the word to their friends for you to gain momentum for business.

Lastly, don’t strive for “perfection.” Don’t go and edit all your pictures to look pretty and perfect, there is no such thing. Every time you post something, make sure it shows your true craft, without all the edits and filters. If someone sees a makeup look you edited and wants exactly that, it will be so hard for you to pull it together and it will disappoint not only you but your client too; it may even destroy your clientele and word of mouth. Just be yourself, show your true work, and the process will come as it comes. Don’t push yourself over the edge due to likes or comments. Your true craft will gain you the business you want. Someone who truly loves what you do and show will always support you. Always. Post what’s true to you, and the rest will come with it :)
