When You Lose Interest in Job

Following the same routine every day can make an individual's life dull and boring. When a person has been working with a firm for many years and does almost the same kind of tasks with no new challenges, he/she might start losing interest in the job. It might happen that when waking up in the morning, you realize that you are done with the job and want to give up. You may have some spectacular accomplishments under your belt, an exceptional team that delivers efficient projects on time, and a handsome package. But you are not able to get over the feeling of quitting. When the brain pulls a plug on something you love to do, staying completely engaged in it can become difficult. This happens because you lose your concentration as your mind wanders off to other things and might end up messing the work. While experiencing a slump in interest is completely normal, it is time to look for some motivation. Motivated and happy employees often tend to be more productive at work and also show better performance. Here are ways that will help you rediscover your lost passion and get you back on track.

Do not be too verbal about your disinterest.

You might think that venting frustration on colleagues will help you overcome the feeling of disinterest, but here is a word of caution! Do not express your newly discovered feeling of boredom to everyone at work. Your coworkers might disengage you and might even avoid you for team celebrations and outings. Instead, watch what you are thinking and look at the positive aspects of your job. Stay away from negative self-talks. Constantly reminding yourself about the drawbacks can inflict on your enthusiasm and drain your energy levels.

Create some new challenges.

Every individual has a dream that he/she wants to see fulfilled some day. This is what keeps you going and pushing to work towards your goal. When you get a feeling of disinterest, take out some "me time" and question yourself. Ask yourself questions like, "Have I come this far to give up in last moment?", "What were the things I wanted to achieve?", "What have I planned to achieve these goals?" Doing this will not only motivate you to make your dreams come true, but also keep the spark in you ignited to achieve what you desire. The "will to succeed" definitely forces an individual to take appropriate steps and might bring out bouts of brilliance in him/her.

Assess your perspective towards the job.

When you go in with a nonchalant attitude towards your job, question why you have been working in this profession until now. Redefine your perspective towards it by understanding what made you take this offer. Apart from package and responsibilities, identify what is that which keeps you going.

Do you feel that you still have unused potential and can do better? Instead of just mindlessly completing assigned tasks, you can ask for more responsibilities that will make you feel alive again. At the same time, understand that these small hassles that you find troublesome in your current scenario might be the stepping stones towards a bright and successful future.

Discuss it with your boss.

Talking to your boss about your loss of interest in work over a cup of coffee might look like a fancy idea, but it may work as he/she can assign you some additional responsibilities. Even if the boss seems unapproachable because of tight schedule, try to fix a meeting and there are chances that he/she will show willingness to listen. When you get such an opportunity, demonstrate you are capable of handling more responsibilities and are willing to take on a new role. Be honest about your ambitions and take on tasks that will not let you feel disengaged.

Have a healthy work-life balance.

When you are fully engrossed in work, it is very easy to forget about the world that awaits you outside the company. Therefore, take out time to enjoy little moments and things you will always look forward to doing such as mingling with friends, developing new hobbies, exercising, or activities that will channel your energy or creativity. When you are involved in activities other than work, you can easily survive drudgery of monotonous tasks at work.

Everyone faces tough days, but you should remember such days do not last. There might be projects you do not want to be a part of. However, instead of feeling unhappy about it, look at ways to tackle such challenges and keep a positive attitude. Focusing on the bright side of the work will not only make your day pass fast, but also help you crack a smile at the end of it.
