Every writer has been there. We don't like to admit it nor do we like to say the word out loud. Guessing you can probably predict where this is going right? Yep, that dreaded term.....

Writer's Block.

It shows up when you least expect it to crash your fun writing party.

Of course everyone is different as to why most writers/creatives can run into this unwanted and unwelcome brick wall, but it doesn't mean you have to accept it, throw in the towel or wave your white flag in submission.

First and foremost we have to give credence to the fact that you're not always going to be on all of the time due to personal, creative, or any other random reasons. The easier way to deal with blockage when it comes to your craft is to view it as if you're in the middle of the ocean during a nasty storm. The more you fight against the grain and attempt to take on the eye of the storm head first, the more you work against yourself and open up the possibility to make it worse than it was initially. But if you ride it out a bit and become one with the elements, you will see that the only thing you really have to do is strap in and be patient until the sun shines bright so that you live to sail another day.

#1.) Eliminate Distractions

This seems like a no brainer and easier said than done but you'd be surprised by how unlikely it's applied. Now everyone's situation may be different due to other life obligations such as family, career, or prior commitments which is very understandable. Those aren't the things you should have to sacrifice but you can almost guarantee there is something in your life where you can make minor subtractions to create room for major additions.

For example we underestimate how much time we spend on social media. When you get a chance take a look at your activity and time spent while logged on. If you are on there for business or networking purposes then set reminders and manage notifications so you're not tempted to scroll mindlessly or allow it to eat away at your precious currency.

#2.) Get Outside

This is an important one for the writing community that should never be taken for granted. We have a tendency to become cozy staring at a screen pounding away at keys and locking ourselves inside voluntarily. Sometimes a breath of fresh air can work wonders on psyche. Take a long walk or run, if you have a family plan some outdoor activities, hell if the weather is comfy enough just do nothing and enjoy nature in it's pure form. Give your brain a rest, you've earned it.

#3.) Don't Forget Your Notebook

Doesn't matter if it's one you can fit in your pocket or carry it in a bag. Even though a smaller notebook is recommended. Every time you step outside weather you need to grab some groceries, run errands, or better yet for any type of leisure.

There's always a potential body of notes within everyday life that will come to you when you least expect it. The reason a small notebook is suggested instead of your notepad app on a smartphone is the psychological impact writing by hand has on the mind.

For example it is linked to improving memory, lowering stress levels, and unlocking creativity by forcing us to slow dow.

Take your time friends.

Take.

Your.

Time.

#4.) Take Notes while listening to your favorite podcast or an audiobook

Have you ever considered writing down notes while you're enjoying the latest episode of a podcast or listening to a new audiobook?

Try it.

Depending on that subject matter of the content you are consuming there's a good chance it can be helpful for your day to day but also may serve as a great way to rev up those creative juices that will power your writing engine.

#5.) Write A Review of your favorite restaurant or product

By Lala Azizli on Unsplash

Do you have a favorite food joint where you are a regular and you can memorize their menu like it's a second language? Or how about a go to product that you can't live without?

If so good!

Chances are you are very knowledgeable about what your eating or using so much that it can encourage you to practice your craft writing on the regular. When there's that much stored information based off memory this style of writing what you have a vast understanding of on the spot can be exceptionally stimulating for the brain. It is the most powerful muscle of the human body.

Don't forget to take it to the gym and work it out.

Now there's only one thing you have to do.....apply action!

Practicality is the key to consistent writing!
