One of the key functions of Human Resources and the supervisor is the staffing process. While acquiring new employees, the human resource manager must ensure that the right process is followed in the hiring process. If the department chooses to over some of the important requirement, the result will be hiring employees that are qualified which can cause the company a lot of damage. The following discussion addresses various questions relating to the staffing process.

The staffing process

The staffing process is the exercise whereby the individuals are hired and developed so as to fill a specific position that is open in an organization. This process comprises of the managerial function of recruitment, selection, training, developing, promotion and compensation of employees in an organization (Dunn, 2016).

How can the human resources department help a manager in the staffing process?

The human resources department can help a manager in the staffing process by initiating various activities that are essential. The first initiative in which this department helpful is by estimation of the requirements of the employee that are to be hired. This is useful since before embarking on the hiring process, the requirements and the number of employees needed must be known. After coming up with the requirements, the department will then assist in recruitment, selection, placement, orientation, and training. Other activities that this department undertakes that are essential in staffing include compensation and promotion.

What role does the supervisor have in the staffing process?

A supervisor carries out various functions in relation to the staffing process. One is offering guidance on the criteria used in the selection of the employees. The other function is carrying out oversight and ensuring that all the staff under the human resource department perform in the right way. The supervisor also recommends new and improved policies that can help to improve staffing (CMU, 2018).

Work Schedules

One type of work schedule is the standard business day where based on this schedule, a supervisor ensures that each employee is at work during the standard business hours such as from 9 am- 5 pm (SHRM, 2017). The other type of work schedule is the flexible work schedule where a supervisor allows the employees to vary the time that they arrive to work or they leave provided the employee works for the number of hours that have been prescribed. The third work schedule is the compressed workweek where the supervisor will see to it that employees work for lesser days in a week but more hours in a given day.

Appropriate and inappropriate questions for an interviewer to ask

One of the appropriate question that an interviewer can ask is the question calling upon the interviewee to tell more about himself. Based on this question, the interviewee is expected to talk about his qualifications. The other question that is appropriate to ask is on the strengths and weaknesses that an interviewee has. One is expected to state the strengths and weaknesses that they have in relation to the job that they wish to take. However, some questions are inappropriate such as questions seeking to know one’s pregnancy status. Another question that is inappropriate is a question seeking to know one’s sexual orientation.
