What would happen if Cthulhu actually existed?

Imagine a world where Cthulhu was a tangible being.

At the beach, the night is filled with darkness and storms, and a group of people gather to witness the thunder in the sky. Suddenly, the god of chaos awakens from his slumber, and Cthulhu, the great green bringer of madness, rises from the depths of the ocean. A massive shadow appears, wielding tentacles, wings, and eyes that seem to penetrate your very soul and mind. If this terrifying demigod from classic literature were present, who would be its first target? What would happen if you gazed upon it, and why would you need to bring out the big guns?

If Cthulhu were a real creature, it would be a terrifying sight to behold. H.P Lovecraft's creation of this monster has become a popular icon in the world of Cosmic horror. According to the myth, Cthulhu has been living on earth long before humans and is currently lurking beneath the planet's crust, using telepathy to communicate with those above. However, if someone were to awaken it with an elaborate ritual, its mission would be to rule or destroy humanity. The most devastating ability of Cthulhu is yet to be encountered, but unless you were a lone sailor lost at sea, you wouldn't have much to worry about, at least not for a while. The mere sight of Cthulhu would be so shocking and incomprehensible that it would make you question your own existence and realize how insignificant you truly are.

Cthulhu possesses the ability to shatter one's sanity, driving them into madness. This affliction would not be experienced in solitude, as Cthulhu would attract other lost souls, leading them to ancient temples where the cult of Cthulhu would be revived. The power of mind manipulation would pale in comparison to what would follow, as Cthulhu would awaken once a sufficient number of individuals were ensnared in its mental grasp.

Its emergence would take place in the South Pacific, where the ancient stone City of its slumber resides. With an insatiable hunger for global domination, Cthulhu would make its way towards either Chile or New Zealand, initiating a devastating rampage. In the face of this atrocity, your best chance of survival would be to close your eyes and flee. Gazing upon Cthulhu would result in the loss of one's sanity. Governments worldwide would attempt to establish contact with Cthulhu using robotic technology, but their efforts would prove futile, as nothing could impede its path of destruction and recruitment of followers. In this chaotic scenario, you would still have three options. Firstly, you could accept your powerlessness and align yourself with Cthulhu. Secondly, you could attempt to escape or evade its grasp.

However, humanity's only true means of salvation would involve departing Earth in spaceships, yet the lack of technological advancements and the limited time available would hinder this possibility. Furthermore, the monster's mind control would continue to beckon us towards it. Lastly, you could choose to fight. Joining the resistance would represent humanity's final stand against Cthulhu. To prevent succumbing to madness when facing the creature, one would need to train in blindfolded combat. However, our armies would also confront the foot soldiers of our new overlords, a legion of shape-shifting aliens created by Cthulhu to lead its human followers. Time would be of the essence, as we would need to act swiftly before the world becomes overrun by these spawns. Fortunately, humanity possesses a wide array of weapons to counter this threat.

Submarines equipped with torpedoes and battleships with fighter jets, unfortunately, the individuals in control of these armaments could potentially fall under the influence of Cthulhu, causing chaos and devastation to our planet. Even if we were to successfully launch an attack on the creature, it would ultimately prove futile. Cthulhu would swiftly recover from any aftermath of the assaults and continue to amass followers. This is an incredibly unfortunate situation. Eventually, we would have no choice but to resort to the use of nuclear weapons. The remaining uncorrupted portion of humanity would unanimously agree to direct all available nuclear missiles towards Cthulhu, unleashing the power of 3 billion tons of TNT upon it.

However, this would result in extensive devastation, causing the loss of countless lives and rendering entire continents uninhabitable. The remaining survivors would be crammed into the remaining habitable land, forced to confront the onset of a deadly nuclear winter. The radioactive materials spread across our planet would devastate already starving populations. Despite this, Cthulhu would still stand, weakened but alive. The nuclear weapons would only provide a temporary respite while Cthulhu regains strength, eventually facing a significantly weaker human race. Ultimately, our chances of survival were nonexistent. I am relieved that this horrifying scenario exists solely within the pages of a book. On the other hand, it is possible that colossal squids lurk in the depths of our oceans, but they are merely creatures of the deep and not monstrous beings.
