No Return

Four, three, two, one and she's back. She was gone for eight minutes and nine seconds this time. How long could she take this? How long before she could go and never have to return? That's why she had volunteered. To be able to go and never have to return. This was her way out. Every time she made up her mind to not go back she was pulled away from death.

Dr. Fannin was elated by the progress of this last return. Eight minutes and nine seconds was a new record. Monica Scott was the perfect lab rat for this test. After three attempted suicides and a year long stay in the mental asylum she was ripe for this. The doctor knew she wanted to die and she would let her but she would be bringing her back every time. She was so glad that she had inserted the acceptance indicator in the formula. She had the control over life and death. No matter how many times the girl died the 'Raging Bull' would pull her back. Soon, everything would be ready. Soon she would be a multi billionaire and living the life of luxury. By the end of the month she would have her assistant to call in potential buyers for her formula. Then, and only then, would she allow Monica Scott to die and never return.

"Last call," shouted the bartender over the loudness of the crowd. Monica signaled to the bartender to bring her two more rounds. After she had downed them both in a matter of seconds, she stood up and left the bar. As she walked home she thought about the report she had recorded. After every resurrection she had to record her experience. Until today, they had all been the same. Today, she had met them, but she had not included this in her report. She would keep this hidden. They had no way of detecting that she wasn't alone. It just may be the one way that she could stay and never have to return. Then she saw it. And it disappeared just as quickly. No. Surely, she had imagined it. This was impossible. They couldn’t be here. Yes of course, she had imagined it. She was home now, and she decided to take a shower and get some rest.

There were ten of them. Each one was trying to make sense of why they were there. How they were there. Maybe she could tell them. Maybe she could take them back. They had come with her. After her refreshing shower, Monica came into her room ready to hit the bed. She saw them, and fainted. Ten, no, maybe thirty minutes later she came to. She had not imagined it, they were there. They were there. They were huddled together on the other side of the room as though they were trying to get as far away from her as possible. There were ten of them. And each one had at least a hundred shadows.. Was this some kind of dream? She poked herself to see, but no, they were still there. She then decided to try and communicate with them. She cautiously took a couple of steps toward them only to hear the most ghastly shrieks and screams coming from them. The sounds were all in her head, which she grabbed and cried out, “Stop! Stop it! I can’t stand this noise. Then she took a step back and the noise stopped. “Why did you bring us here?” the shadows asked in a whispered voice. You broke the boundary. You can come but never go back…
