Ghosts are commonly portrayed as the tormented spirits of dead people who can’t find rest. These spectral beings are often seen as frightening and threatening, since they tend to lurk in dark places and visit unsuspecting humans when they least expect it. With so many ghost stories out there, it’s fair to say that we are obsessed with the idea of the dead coming back to haunt the living. However, these stories aren’t always fictional – there have been numerous real-life ghost sightings reported around the world for centuries.

1. The Old Shimbashi Suicide Bridge:
This bridge in Tokyo was built over 100 years ago and was known as a spot for people to commit suicide. After a falling out with her husband, a woman named Yoshida was heartbroken. She decided to end her life by jumping off the bridge. Unfortunately, Yoshida’s suicide attempt failed and she survived the fall. The next day, Yoshida was shocked to discover that the ghost of her husband had jumped off the same bridge. Since that day, the ghost of Yoshida’s husband has been seen wandering around the bridge, desperately searching for his wife.

2. Shibashi-gawa Ghost:
In the mid-19th century, a woman named Otsuyu was accused of being a witch, which was a common occurrence in Japan at that time. She was put on trial and sentenced to death. Before her execution, Otsuyu asked for permission to visit her home one last time. She was granted this request and walked the short distance to her house. The police officers who escorted Otsuyu were surprised to see that the walk took much longer than they were expecting. They were even more surprised when they discovered that Otsuyu’s house had crumbled to the ground years ago. In the years since Otsuyu’s death, witnesses have reported seeing a mysterious woman wandering along the nearby riverbank. Many believe that this woman is Otsuyu and that she can’t find rest because she was executed unfairly.

3. Ryugemonyaki Ruins of Fukuoka:
These old ruins in Fukuoka were once the home of a nobleman named Ryugemonyaki. Born in the 1700s, Ryugemonyaki lived a lavish life until he lost everything in a business deal gone wrong. After his home was repossessed, Ryugemonyaki began to live in the ruins of his old house. Eventually, Ryugemonyaki was killed in a dispute, but his ghost reportedly remained at the ruins. Since then, many have reported seeing the ghostly figure of a man in the ruins. Some even say that the ghost will appear when the ruins are being demolished.

4. Kusanagi-no-Katana (The Kusanagi Sword):
The Kusanagi-no-Katana is one of the most famous Japanese swords in history. It was used in the legendary battle of the Ninja Scrolls, in which an army of rebels defeated an army of samurai. However, like many other weapons in history, the Kusanagi-no-Katana is rumored to be cursed. According to the ghost story, if a person draws the sword from its scabbard, he or she will die within a year. One Japanese man claimed to have disproved the curse by pulling the sword from its scabbard. He said that nothing happened to him, but just 10 days later, he suffered a fatal heart attack.

5. Tōfu Women of Tokyo:
Tokyo is a modern city with a rich and diverse culture, but there are still some eerie ghost stories lurking in the city’s past. One of these is about a group of women who made their living by selling tofu. One day, a man went to the tofu shop and mistakenly gave the women a large sum of money. Instead of returning the money, the women decided to keep the man’s cash. The man went back to the shop and demanded his money back. When the women refused, he reported the incident to the authorities. The women were arrested and sentenced to death by hanging. When the women were hanged, their ghosts were said to have returned to the tofu shop and haunted it ever since.

6. Kaneda Masked Men of Yokohama:
Yokohama is one of the largest cities in Japan and has a rich culture and history. It is also home to a very spooky ghost story. However, in the early 20th century, a famous actor named Kaneda often visited the theater and hosted shows there. Kaneda’s visits became less frequent over time, and the theater eventually closed down. In the years since the theater has been abandoned, numerous people have reported seeing the ghost of Kaneda wandering the corridors. Kaneda’s ghost is said to be wearing a mask, which is a strange choice of attire for a ghost to wear. However, no one knows why he would wear a mask.

7. Tedori and the Dark :

Tedori’s army was defeated and he was forced to commit seppuku, which is a ritualistic form of suicide by disembowelment. After his death, Tedori’s spirit was believed to have haunted the woods where his army was defeated. However, there was one mysterious aspect to Tedori’s ghost – it was always extremely dark.
