Jamie knew that it would happen again tonight. It always did when she felt this way. She had worked a double at the hospital, the children were at her mother's and her husband was out of town for his job. Every time she was overworked, alone, and had underslept she could count on the terror in the night. She took a shower, turned on the television and went to bed with the table lamp on. As always, she was just dozing off, and was somewhere in between sleep and waking when it began. She heard the voices in her head, like fragments of conversations in whispers, There was a buzzing noise but at the same time, she could hear the television show that was on.

Neither sleep nor fully awake, her body was paralyzed but her mind still active. Suddenly she felt as if she were falling and sinking right through the bed. She was afraid that if she did not pull herself out right away, she might be lost forever. Would she sink into the depths of the bowels of hell? She did know, and neither did she desire to find out. Jamie tried to move and pull herself out but she could not. She tried to speak and could not even open her mouth. Suddenly the overwhelming feeling of doom approaching took her over. She could sense that something was in the room watching her. It was ominous and standing nearby and she wished she had prayed before getting in the bed.

She tried to wiggle her toes, move her fingers, or any part of her body and get out of this before something bad happened. She could feel the evil coming closer and finally, she fought hard enough so that she sat straight up in the bed. Why she wondered was she cursed to have to deal with sleep paralysis and night terrors. her breathing was pretty fast but it soon slowed down. She looked around the room and saw nothing out of order. The ordeal had felt as if it was taking forever, but the clock told her that it had only been a few moments. She was so tired from working overtime that she simply could not remain awake.

Jamie lay back down and once again it started. This time she was dreaming that she was lying in the bed when suddenly she began to rise as if she were floating. When she was about four or five inches above the bed two arms reached up from underneath her and clasped themselves around her waist as if to hold her and keep her from going any further. When she woke up she was in the bed as normal but exhausted. She shared the ordeal the next day with her friend Tyneshia who told her something quite frightening. Nesha said that Jamie most likely was on the verge of astral projection and that her spirit was leaving her body. She said that the hands that reached up were from her actual body trying to keep her spirit from leaving.

All of this was too much for her and Jamie wanted no part of any of it. She decided that it all had been a bad dream as a result of working too hard. The next night she began to fall asleep it all started again. She told herself it was only a dream and would soon pass. The feeling of being paralyzed and unable to move, the sensation that something evil was near, the humming and whispers all happened again. This time however she did not have the out of body experience but something different took place. She actually thought she saw a lit candle hovering over her in the bed. This was new and had never happened before. She could feel the heat and smell the wax.

Again she fought until she brought herself out of it and when she woke, Jamie felt as if she had been in a hard battle. She grabbed her robe and started to the bathroom, thinking how night terrors seemed so real but were all in the imagination. Just as she got to the door she jumped with a start. Just under the ball of her right foot it felt as if she had stepped into a hot flame. She grabbed her foot and saw that it was red and raw. She looked down to see what she had stepped on and was shocked to recognize candle wax on the floor. At that moment she realized that what had been happening to her was very real indeed.
