The Owl In The Dark Tree
A Tale Inspired By "The Owl and the Mice" Illustrated by Gustave Doré (1867)

Introduction
This is another startlingly good image shared by The Enchanted Booklet on Facebook here:
I love the detail, not just the owl itself, although the mice lend extra darkness to the image.
The music is "The Owl" by Slapp Happy and Henry Cow
The Owl In The Dark Tree
The castle in the dark woods was abandoned by himanity, although any who came close said that they felt a presence there. The sun never shone in the woods, and though a weak light filtered down from the skies that were usually just grey rain clouds.
Not far from the castle stod a dark tree and, in that tree sat an evil owl. The owl was cruel and only left its tree to catch mice which it imprisoned in its next, until it felt peckish, so to speak.
The mice knew their fate, but did not know how or when it would come.
The owl sat and watched warding off any creature or person who came close.
The mice waited, they could not escape. If they tried, they knew that they would be eaten by the owl.
The mice believed the owl was eternal. It had outlasted the humans in the castle, and seemed content to sit in its dark tree.
The owl was everlasting, but the mice were not.
Still the mice waited, and waited, knowing their time would come.
