The Mystery of the Mutilated Cattle

o"The Mystery of the Mutilated Cattle: A Montana Cowboy's Encounters with the Unexplained"

ug Averill grew up in rural Montana on his parents' sprawling dude ranch, the Flathead Lake Lodge. He was one of eight boys, and they spent their teenage years running wild on the ranch as a gang of cowboys. Their favorite activity was to saddle up and head out to check the cattle on the family's three giant tracts of land, which formed a triangle around some of the state's most remote rangelands.

One summer day in the 1960s, the Averill boys stumbled upon a shocking scene. They discovered three dead cows, arranged in a circle. The reproductive organs of the cows had been removed, but there was no visible evidence of wounds. Averill vividly remembers the scene: "It was almost surgical removal, but there was never any blood."

At the time, America was obsessed with the idea of aliens, and local newspapers published write-ups that suggested extraterrestrial involvement in the strange event. People speculated that the aliens had taken the reproductive organs for testing. However, Averill and his friends soon found a lance in their path, which had a cryptic note attached to it, bearing a threatening message. Averill and his friends realized that humans were responsible for the incident, not aliens.

The strange events did not end there. The next few days were marked by even odder events. The Averill brothers stopped at a local bar to grab a hamburger, leaving their horses in the back of a stock truck. When they returned, they found that one of their horses had been mysteriously unloaded, and there were no signs of a struggle. The next day, a new wrangler on the ranch fell off his horse and suffered severe injuries, even though none of the crew members had seen the accident. Finally, an old camp cook who had driven out to meet the brothers and ride for a day discovered that the tailgate of his stock truck had gone missing, and his horse, Betsy, had fallen out of the truck and been dragged behind it for some distance. They had to put the horse down on the spot. The three incidents were connected, like the three dead cows left in a circle. The three incidents were connected, like the three dead cows left in a circle.

Averill used to recount these stories around the campfire, but he has since retired them, as they are grim. However, he recently received a call about a downed buffalo, a bull. It was in one of the most remote parts of his ranch, and a neighbor had reported seeing a pack of 16 wolves in the area. When Averill went to investigate, he found the bull lying in a snow-covered field, but there were no bullet holes or teeth marks or gashes on its corpse. Stranger still, scavenging animals and birds had not touched it, and there were no footprints in the snow around the bull or anywhere along the mile-long walk into the ranch from the nearest road. Its reproductive organs had been removed.

When asked whether he believes that humans or aliens are responsible for the strange incidents, Averill says he thinks it's humans. However, he adds that he would rather it be aliens, given what he saw humans capable of during that summer in the 1960s.When asked whether he believes that humans or aliens are responsible for the strange incidents, Averill says he thinks it's humans.
