The Leech

During a school excursion, Rita, Naomi, and Erina, high school students, took advantage of the opportunity to swim in the lake while their classmates rested on the shore. Ignoring the warnings to stay close, the trio ventured to the deeper side of the lake, relishing their freedom. However, their carefree afternoon took a horrifying turn when they encountered a blood-sucking leech.

Erina, shrieking in fear, desperately tried to remove the leech from her body. Rita and Naomi rushed to her aid, their hearts pounding. With a swift motion, Erina ripped the leech off and threw it to the ground. The grotesque creature wriggled on the wet mud, its dark, slimy skin glistening in the afternoon sun. Relieved to have escaped unscathed, the girls made their way back to the other side of the lake.

Their joyous chatter dissipated, replaced by a heavy silence. As they walked, the girls couldn't help but discuss Kamoharu, the popular boy in their class. Naomi, in particular, expressed admiration for his baseball skills. However, her conversation abruptly halted when she let out an ear-piercing scream. Rita, bewildered, called out to her friend in Japanese, asking what was wrong. Erina's expression indicated that she might have understood, but before Rita could ask her, Naomi turned around, and the cause of her terror became evident.

The girls were filled with shock and horror as they saw the leech clinging to Naomi's back. Reacting swiftly, they rushed to help her, removing the leech and ensuring her safety. As they calmed down, the teacher, Mr. Ito, approached them, scolding them for swimming too far and creating an unnecessary commotion. He reminded them that there were bigger problems in the world to be concerned about and promptly fished out three leeches from the lake.

Mr. Ito placed a leech in a jar for each girl, instructing them to take it home and get accustomed to it. He believed that by confronting these creatures, they would learn that there were larger challenges in life than simple parasites. The girls were left in silence, contemplating the events of the day.

That night, as they sat huddled in a social circle in front of a crackling fire, the girls resumed their conversations, this time delving into creepy topics. Erina, known for her eerie storytelling, shared tales that sent shivers down their spines. The atmosphere became filled with screeches and giggles, a mixture of fear and excitement. In the midst of their conversation, Naomi's tone turned serious as she looked at Rita and posed a question.

"Have you ever experienced kanashibari?" Naomi asked, her gaze fixed on Rita. Erina, already familiar with the term, nodded in agreement. Rita, however, was clueless and responded slowly, trying to understand the meaning. Kanashibari, she learned, referred to the phenomenon of waking up unable to move. A boy named Tomaharu, who happened to be nearby, chimed in, offering the term "sleep paralysis." Although unfamiliar with it, Rita found it creepy, but she questioned its reality.

Naomi vehemently insisted that sleep paralysis was real, recounting her own experience from the previous winter. She vividly described the feeling of being immobilized for an hour, trapped in her own body. Tomaharu jokingly suggested that maybe it happened during Mr. Kitaki's history class, provoking laughter from everyone except Naomi, who quietly denied the connection. She affirmed that kanashibari was a genuine and terrifying experience.

The following week, as the girls returned to school, they noticed Erina's absence from the classroom. Naomi and Rita exchanged concerned glances but remained hopeful that she might be ill and would return soon. However, days turned into a week, and a cloud of unease settled over the school. The principal and Mr. Ito held hushed conversations, casting worried glances in the direction of the girls. It seemed Erina's disappearance was not a simple matter of illness.

Curiosity mingled with fear as Rita and Naomi found themselves alone with Mr. Ito after school. Sensing their unease, he gently asked about Erina, inquiring if they knew anything about her whereabouts. Rita and Naomi exchanged quick glances, unsure of how much to reveal. However, Mr. Ito's questioning left them with no answers, only a heavy feeling of responsibility and guilt.

Unable to shake off the weight of the situation, Naomi decided to return to the classroom and retrieve her bag, hoping to find some clue or explanation. As she stepped inside, the silence seemed deafening. The sun cast long shadows through the windows, creating an eerie ambiance. She noticed a faint whisper of voices coming from the principal's office and instinctively moved closer to eavesdrop.

What she overheard sent shivers down her spine. The principal's voice trembled as he revealed that Erina had disappeared the previous night. His words echoed in Naomi's mind, amplifying her fear. The realization hit her like a punch to the gut—there were bigger concerns than the leeches they had encountered. Fear gripped her heart as she rushed home, a sense of foreboding engulfing her.

That night, unable to sleep, Naomi found herself staring at the leech in the jar on her table. Its movements, once repulsive, now seemed almost hypnotic. As she observed it, a strange calmness washed over her. The events of the past weeks had altered her perception. No longer afraid of the leech, she realized that there were deeper and darker forces at play. Its existence seemed minuscule in comparison.

Naomi's intention was to call Rita and inform her about what she had overheard. However, exhaustion overcame her, and she fell into an uneasy slumber before she could pick up the phone.

In a different part of town, Rita tossed and turned in bed, her mind tormented by troubling thoughts. The leech in the jar on her nightstand seemed to sense her unease, behaving erratically. It twisted and turned, its movements becoming increasingly erratic. Rita, paralyzed by some unknown force, could only watch in horror as the leech grew in size, smashing against the glass.

As the glass shattered, the leech freed itself, slithering closer to Rita with each passing second. The room seemed to warp around her, the walls closing in, as if mocking her helplessness. She mustered all her strength, her body straining against the invisible restraints. With an adrenaline-fueled scream, she regained momentary control, allowing her to shout for help.

Just as the creature loomed over her, a menacing presence ready to consume her, a figure appeared at the window. It was Naomi, her face etched with determination and a fierce protective instinct. The leech recoiled in pain, shrinking in size as Naomi's scream pierced through the room. Together, they unleashed a primal cry, overpowering the creature until it was small enough for Naomi to stomp on.

The commotion caught the attention of Rita's parents, who burst into the room, witnesses to the aftermath of the horror. Their faces twisted in terror, they struggled to comprehend the scene before them. It was a sight no parent should ever have to witness—their child caught in the clutches of a nightmarish creature. As they stood frozen in shock, a sudden noise from the doorway interrupted their thoughts.

Erina stumbled into the room, her presence sending chills down their spines. Something was off about her, as if she was no longer fully herself. Before anyone could react, she convulsed in pain, and a grotesque leech creature emerged from her body, wreaking havoc in its wake. Rita's father, fueled by a surge of protective instinct, kicked the creature away, leading to a final showdown outside.

With a determined glint in his eyes, he grabbed an ax, engaging in a fierce battle with the creature that seemed to defy all logic. Blow after blow, he fought with unyielding determination until, finally, the creature lay motionless on the ground, vanquished.

A year passed, and life gradually returned to normal for Rita, Naomi, and their families. The memory of that terrifying ordeal lingered, a constant reminder that beneath the surface, deeper and darker issues could lurk. The strange phenomenon with the leeches remained unexplained, a puzzle they had no answers to. Yet, it served as a haunting reminder that there were larger battles to be fought, hidden in the shadows of everyday life.

Rita and Naomi, forever bonded by their shared experience, had moved on. They had grown stronger, more resilient. But they understood that the world held mysteries far beyond their comprehension. They had witnessed firsthand the terrors that could manifest when one delved too deeply into the unknown.

As they navigated their teenage years, they remained vigilant, aware that the surface was often deceiving. They learned to pay attention to the signs, to trust their instincts when things seemed amiss. And while they couldn't explain the leeches or Erina's transformation, they knew that sometimes, it was better to leave certain mysteries unsolved.

Life moved forward, but the girls carried with them the valuable lesson that beneath the veil of normalcy, unseen and unfathomable dangers lurked. It was a reminder to remain vigilant, to question what lay beneath the surface, and to never underestimate the power of the darkness that resides within the depths of the human experience.
