The Deep House - A Movie Review
'The Deep House' is a different horror movie that has a uniquely dark setting.
Are you sure that nothing is going to happen if we explore this underwater house?
Diving into the lake in 2021, The Deep House is a film about two divers who discover a house at the bottom of a lake in France. Making their investigation for their social media channel, they awaken a dark presence in the house.
Discovering this film from Dead Meat, (one of my favorite Youtube channels) The Deep House is a different horror movie that has a uniquely dark setting. Taking place entirely underwater, the film is really cool to look at. Overall, the story isn’t as original to the otherworldly atmosphere of the film.
Camille Rowe and James Jagger spent most of the film submerged underwater. Right from the start, this film is more about the house than the characters. They swim around, make discoveries, and tell one another to wait up constantly. Their startling reactions were effective.
There’s not much room for character growth. Writers should have conducted more time expanding Tina and Ben so we could have cared about them. The story fell flat. Once the characters arrive at the house, scenes repeat with the two swimming into all the rooms one too many times.
Anna Claessens, Alexis Servaes, and Caroline Massey had creative roles but they were written as a cliche trope from most horror movies. Are they ghosts? Or are they real people who live under the water? Their appearances were frightening. Makeup succeeded in creating believable underwater makeup.
Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury created something new. We have never seen this concept in a horror movie before. Here’s where the story didn’t take advantage of its concept. There could have been several theories as to why this house is underwater.
Some parts of the film reminded me of Oculus. At times, one of the characters experienced a scary situation, only to reveal that it was all in their imagination by the other character who was thought to have left the room. And as usual, the entrance the characters came in is now blocked off. As I said, The Deep House could have been more original.
Writers weren’t sure if The Deep House was a ghost movie or some other paranormal experience. The scenario where it’s a family living underwater sounded more exciting. Like most ghost films, characters appeared in the corner for only a second until disappearing.
Filmmakers designed an incredible underwater house. I’m curious to find out how they designed this set. Constructing an entire house under the water, all the rooms were constructed with algae building up on everything. To make this world all the more eerie, objects, like lamps or a tissue box sit normally on a table. Except, chairs are skewered about.
The whole design is like something you would see in your nightmares with how the camera moved throughout all the rooms. If you were wondering what walking underwater looks like, take it from me, it looks creepy. The Deep House is the right horror movie to make you sit on the edge of your seat.
Because The Deep House takes place underwater for its duration, it’s almost hard to breathe. I liked the tense atmosphere. You have no idea what will be around each corner. There are some moments when I did a double-take because it’s tough to see what’s under the water.
I recommend The Deep House to horror fans looking for a new film. This is a film that should be talked about more based on its unique premise. It kept me on the edge of my seat.
