Reed Alexander's Horror Review of 'The People Under the Stairs' (1991)
Here's a fantastic horror movie from my childhood that had an attitude like Don't Kill It (2016), wherein the tone of the movie switches gears a lot. However, this movie was the first to do it and that should be no surprise from the mind of Wes Craven, the guy who gave us a pun-slinging joker who was also a child-murdering dream demon. So, for the most part, this movie is a little tongue and cheek, even kinda slapstick, but then all of a sudden it goes fucking HARD. We're talking about a movie that has R-rated Home Alone (1990) vibes but then also has triggery as fuck, hardcore child abuse. Like, hold nothing back, violent child abuse. It's sorta stunning to sit through and definitely not for the weak of stomach. So, if we define this movie as sort of a horror comedy, it's definitely one that leans on the horror element HARD, and I mean sandpaper dildo with no lube, HARD.

The House of Shadows. Content Warning.
The old mansion stood perched on the outskirts of town, its towering facade casting long shadows that seemed to stretch far beyond the reach of the moonlight. Locals whispered tales of the house's dark past, claiming it was haunted by the spirits of those who had met tragic ends within its walls. Its ornate windows were said to glow with an otherworldly light on moonlit nights, and eerie whispers could be heard in the wind that swept through the overgrown garden. Few dared to venture near the house, for its mysteries were as captivating as they were chilling.

The Horse-headed Creature
In the depths of the Philippine forest, there exists a creature so fearsome and mighty that it has struck fear into the hearts of even the bravest of men - the Tikbalang, a horse-headed creature that is known for leading travelers astray and causing untold suffering and despair. It was on a cool and dark evening that a young adventurer named Rafael found himself lost in the heart of the forest. He had heard the tales of the Tikbalang and its treacherous ways, but he had never truly believed in their existence. Yet here he was, lost and alone, with nothing but the whispers of the forest to keep him company. As he made his way through the undergrowth, Rafael felt a sense of unease begin to rise within him, a prickling sensation at the back of his neck that he knew all too well. He felt as though he was being watched, and as he turned around, he saw a great horse-headed creature before him, towering over him with its immense size and terrifying presence. Rafael froze, not knowing what to do. He had heard that the Tikbalang was a creature of great power and dark magic, one that could easily ensnare him and lead him to his doom. And yet, he knew that he had no other choice but to face it head-on. As the creature began to move towards him, Rafael suddenly felt a sense of calm wash over him. He remembered his training, the lessons that he had learned from his father, and his grandfather before him - the lessons of bravery and courage, the lessons of never giving up, no matter how terrifying the situation may be. With a deep breath, Rafael took a step forward, his hand outstretched in a gesture of peace. The Tikbalang initially reared back, snarling and baring its teeth, but as Rafael continued to approach, it slowly began to calm down, its eyes meeting Rafael's with a sense of curiosity and wonder. And so began a strange and incredible friendship, one that no one could have ever predicted. Rafael and the Tikbalang spent countless hours together, exploring the forest, sharing in each other's joys and sorrows, and learning from one another. Rafael learned the secrets of the forest, the language of the birds, and the songs of the wind, while the Tikbalang shared with him the ancient legends and lore of their people, stories that had been passed down through generations. But as life would have it, their happy times together were not meant to last. One day, Rafael was forced to leave the forest, his journey taking him far from the place that he had grown to love. As he said his goodbye to his friend, he felt a sense of loss and sadness, a sense of missing that he knew would never truly go away. Years went by, and Rafael returned home, his heart filled with the memories of his time in the forest. It was there that he became a storyteller, spinning tales of the Tikbalang and the other creatures of the forest, tales that had been passed down through the generations. One day, as he was telling a story to a group of children, he felt a sense of familiarity in the air. As he looked up, he saw a great horse-headed creature before him, its eyes shining with recognition and joy. It was his friend, the Tikbalang, returned to him after all these years, to see him once more and to share in the joy of their friendship. And so, Rafael and the Tikbalang spent their days together once again, exploring the forest, sharing in its wonders and secrets, and learning from one another. And though Rafael knew that he would eventually have to leave again, he knew that he would always remember the lessons learned from his time with the Tikbalang, lessons of courage, bravery, and above all, friendship.

The Enchantress
The darkness crept in, wrapped itself around the village, and left it cold and shivering, fearful for its very existence. The villagers knew darkness, and they knew it well. It had been creeping in and lurking around the corners of their village for years. They had tried everything to rid themselves of it, but nothing ever worked. That is until Mambabarang came into their lives. She was a powerful witch, a mystical figure with the ability to harness dark magic and use it for good. The villagers had heard of her abilities, but none had ever seen her until she walked into their village one day, shrouded in mystery, her eyes burning with a bright intensity. The villagers watched her as she strode through their town, and they knew right away that she was not to be feared, but rather, to be revered. They welcomed her and offered her shelter, food, and a place to rest. Mambabarang was grateful, and she sat down with the villagers to listen to their concerns. The villagers explained how evil spirits plagued their village. How they would wake up in the middle of the night to hear the whispers of the spirits, the cries of the suffering, and the groans of the dying. They spoke of how, during the night, their crops would wither and die, and how their livestock was often found dead, their bodies unmarked, and their faces twisted in agony. Mambabarang listened carefully, her eyes closed, her mind focused. She knew what needed to be done. She spoke to the villagers and asked for their trust, their faith, and their hope. She wanted to help them, but they had to trust her to do so. The villagers agreed, and Mambabarang set to work immediately. She gathered the things she needed, a bowl of hot water, a piece of cloth, and a black magic stone, and made her way to the center of the village. She began to chant, her voice low and husky, and the villagers listened intently, their hearts racing with anticipation. Suddenly, the ground beneath them began to shake, and the villagers scrambled to their feet, their eyes wide with fear. Mambabarang remained calm. She raised her hands and began to dance in a slow, rhythmic motion. Her movements were hypnotic, and as she danced, the ground began to settle, and the air began to clear. The whispers of the spirits grew fainter, and the cries of the suffering started to fade away. The villagers watched as Mambabarang worked her magic, and they knew that she was truly a force to be reckoned with. As the night wore on, Mambabarang continued to work her magic, using her powers to expel the evil from the village. She battled the spirits, the dark magic, and the evil that had plagued the village for so long, and one by one, she defeated them. The villagers watched in awe as Mambabarang worked her magic, and they knew that they would always be grateful to her. She had saved their village, and they knew that she would always have a place in their hearts. Mambabarang had become a legend, a mystical figure whose power was revered throughout the land. She continued to travel from village to village, using her powers to help those in need and fight against evil. Her legend grew, and soon her name was whispered in awe throughout the land. Years passed, and the villagers never forgot Mambabarang or the magic she had brought to their lives. They knew that her magic had been real, and they knew that her powers were truly beyond their comprehension. And so, they continued to tell her legend, and her memory lived on, a testament to the power of good magic and the ability to fight against even the toughest of odds. For Mambabarang, the enchantress, was truly a force to be reckoned with, a powerful figure whose magic would live on forever.

"Annabelle" is a 2014 supernatural horror film directed by John R. Leonetti and serves as a prequel to "The Conjuring" franchise. The film centers around a possessed doll named Annabelle and explores the origins of its malevolent presence.
