The Last Hope
It was a dark and stormy night, the kind that makes you feel like something is watching you from the shadows. The wind howled and the rain beat against the windows, and I couldn't help but shiver as I sat alone in my creaky old house. I had always loved the eerie atmosphere of horror movies and books, but I never thought that I would experience true terror until that fateful night.

Shelby's Awakening
"The mirror showed a reflection that wasn't my own," Shelby nearly screamed in the confessional, "I wasn't there, you understand, father?" "What are you trying to tell me, child?" The hidden figure asked. "I am a vampire!" "Do you drink blood?" The hidden figure asked another question. "Well, no, father, …" "Then you are not a vampire," the figure behind the screen said with a sigh, "Now please stop wasting my time. There are people with real problems that need to confess their sins. Please recite the Our Father and Hail Mary five times each. And please donate whatever you can to the collection plate on your way out. With that the vertical door slid down with a click, bringing the confession to an end. Shelby sat for a few seconds before getting up and walking through the squeaky wooden door. She looked at the waiting line, hoping no one heard her, but seeing the faces of those waiting clearly showed they had heard. She pulled up the collar of her jacket and ran out of the cathedral. The rain had increased to a drench and it was cold. Her light brown hair was already stuck to her skin and a chill running down her spine. She lifted her arm to protect her eyes from the falling water and looked for her Hyundai. She couldn't see very far in the torrential downpour, but knew it was on the otherside of the road. Her swift movements carried her to the otherside in seconds and she was scanning down the line of cars. Her royal blue car appeared a few extra car lengths down and she started patting her pockets for the keys. The thunk of the lock made a muffled click and Shelby was attacked from behind. She was pushed against the car and pinned for the second it took for the attacker to get the back passenger door open and then thrown in face first. The attacker, twice her size, was soon inside the car and pawing at her clothes. With some effort the unknown man had her jacket over her head and quickly flipped her around between his legs. Shelby couldn't see anything with her head and arms caught up in her jacket, but she didn't need sight to know the deranged criminal was now going for her pants. Shelby was not going to let this happen. She dug down deep and found a strength she never had before that moment. A ripping sound echoed in the small compartment, drowning out the heavy breathing of both parties, and once she was free of her jacket, now in shreds, she started to punch the man in his head. This only enraged the man and turned his attention to beating Shelby instead of going for her clothes. Shelby endured the massive haymakers, almost like the pain didn't register, and waited for her attacker to get tired. The second he paused his right fist was the second Shelby attacked. She instinctively extended her fingers, allowing her nails to grow and become razor sharp, and jabbed at the man's stomach. The smell of blood filled the tiny cabin, eliciting a new hunger inside Shelby. She now grabbed the man, her right hand covered in blood, by the shoulders and opened her mouth. Several of her teeth seemed to sharpen themselves as they dropped down and extended out a few centimeters. The big attacker started to scream; he was the helpless one now. Shelby pulled herself up and yanked the man's neck down. Her lips were soon flush with the sweaty neck as her teeth slipped through the fragile skin of her prey. Her eyes were closed as she sucked in his life essence while the man was violently trying to fight Shelby off. His struggling was slowly becoming sluggish as his blood was being drained through his neck. After a few long minutes the man was lifeless and Shelby was a new woman. She had never felt so alive. She couldn't feel her heart beating or see herself in the rear view mirror, but she felt alive. She tried to wipe the lingering blood off of her mouth with her shirt sleeve as she climbed into the front seat. She looked for her keys, finding them on the back seat floorboard, and started her Hyundai. "Where am I going to drop you off?"
