They Know
The red wall had black flakes. Teagan Davis sat, elbows pressing into her knees. The room - frozen in chaos. The couch she sat on was askew, glass shattered laying throughout the room, picture frames fallen and cracked, a little black notebook splayed out amongst the clutter, just out of sight. Money strewn on the floor of the kitchen in the other room.

Treasure Hunt
The moment I finished digging into my backyard I went from feeling thrilled and wishful to sheer panic and shock as my whole body got numb and my mind froze cold. My hand let go of the shovel. I knew I had moments left before it took over. My final thoughts of just observing the world around me and trying to fathom what I had unleashed. Was this even possible? The ping of the shovel hitting the stone path beside my freshly dug hole snapped me out of my daze. The midnight air breezed through my hair one last time. I felt stuck in place I couldn’t move because something had already grabbed me. Inch by inch I felt my whole being disappearing in place. Up from my muddied shoes this feeling crawled up me. I felt it up my legs, then up across my chest and down over my arms. It reached my neck, it all happened so fast, only moments ago I had just dug all the dirt away and punctured a wooden box with the shovel and now I am ceasing to exist. I knew that was happening because in my last moment I looked down and I saw nothing about me, a shadow came out of the box I hit and in return had transformed me. I was disappearing and in my place floating to the ground where I once stood something was materializing. I saw my treasure, the treasure was real.

I wasn’t ready to die. I knew that much. Maybe that’s all I ever knew, because there is no way in hell I could have told you one week ago that this is where I would fucking be. I’m not going to ‘take you back to where it all began’, but I will tell you one thing. If you find the book, or the book finds you, DO NOT TRUST IT. DO NOT OPEN IT. The book doesn’t care what colour your hair is, how many times you’ve fallen in love, the lullabies your mother used to sing when you were young, or if you even had parents at all. The book only cares that you drink it, letting the words trickle down your throat until they catch in your chest and flood your lungs leaving you gasping for more of the very thing that is causing you to drown. The book will submerge you, and you can only sink and wish you had heeded my warning, and not opened that goddamn book. Fuck it. No way in hell are you gonna put down the book now that I’ve hooked your curiosity. What’s that old saying? Curiosity killed the cat. You’re damn right. So, let me take you back to where it all began. What a joke.

It’s impolite to throw things at strangers
Rose was walking down Main St. on her way to work. It was so hot she could literally see her sweat sizzling as she hurried to get out of the sun hanging in a bright purple sky. The towering buildings that lined the streets swayed gently, but their subtle movements provided almost no breeze at all for pedestrians.

The Little Black Book
The day of work started pretty typically for Jacob. He arrived at the convenience shop for work at 8:05(a couple minutes late per usual), consumed a cup of coffee and a donut, and then found his post behind the cash register, to begin idly flipping through a book of sorts while awaiting customers. Though nothing out of the ordinary had stirred quite yet, Jacob had the feeling that something miraculous was to occur that day. A slight upbeat apprehension that stirred his insides. Yet he sat and waited, unfazed.

The Job's Not Done
Time was running out. I had the bag packed, the rest of the cash and a one way ticket across the country. Everything else I’ll figure out when I land. I left that damned battered black book on the nightstand, turned off the lights and slammed the door behind me. After throwing my bag in the back I hopped in the driver’s seat and threw the car into reverse. As I hit the road, I felt a wave of calm start to wash over me, relieved I defied the odds and was in the clear. I pulled up to a four way intersection, slowly creeping forward and saw no one in any of the directions so I proceeded to cross. Just as I was in the middle, a black SUV careens into the front of my car, sending me spinning, only to be stopped by a tree.

Requiem
Adalia was certain there was someone peering into her window. She had awoken at an ungodly hour, well past nightfall. Frost covers the glass windowpane in a gossamer web, absorbing and reflecting the moonlight in its tiny streams. Violet, Adalia’s cat, defensively arches; she grates out a predatory hiss that is at odds with her noticeable smell of fear.
