The Secret
Nate heard the sound of the shower kick on, Nora was first tonight, but he would be lying if he said he could wait to get clean himself. It had been a fairly busy day, and after a week of working second shift, getting a good night’s sleep was a blessing. He threw on his coat and made his way to the front door. Nate needed a cigarette, even if the weather outside was frightful. An early season nor’easter had decided to blow through, and the wind was howling in the sideways rain.

Fear in the Caverns
Screacher loathed the tourists encroaching on his ground, his sanctuary in the wild. “Why must they trespass, this is mine!” He spoke aloud, enraged. Rocky terrain flooded with tall trees and generous foliage consistent with that of a national forest, Mammoth Cave to be exact, in the state of Kentucky. Screacher had dealt with these eager nature hunters before. Hikers, trekkers, horse-back riders, “The whole blasted lot of them!” he grumbled. “They will pay, oh yes, they must pay. Just like the others…”

Spirit Lake
My change was so innocent, peaceful even. Not at all like the beginning of the end of Mount St. Helens. To understand my incarnation, I suppose I should explain the violence that happened before my birth: the eruption of Mt. St. Helens. In one instant, May 18th, 1980, she blasted out 23 square miles of rock, mud and debris; a hot, steaming avalanche that reached 300 mph, killing 61 people, most of which landed in Spirit Lake. What didn't land in Spirit Lake was washed back down into the lake by an 850-foot wave. All in all, about 430,000,000 cubic meters of pyrolyzed trees, organic matter (including human), volcanic ash and debris landed in Spirit Lake: my lake.

The Siren's Song
The Arcane River flows through a series of giant geysers within an untouched forest in the depths of Northern New Zealand. The river run along the emerald green trees that seemed to brush the cotton candy pink clouds of the midsummer sunset. The hills seemed to stare at the truck driving through them almost intently. Just watching. Jim lets off the gas a little to enjoy the view. He rolled down his window and stuck his head out.

Bloom
The marsh stinks of rot and old magic, smothered beneath the fresh scent of spring. The smell is familiar, and though some may find it unpleasant, I find comfort in it. The day is bleak: the sky grey, the grasses bleached of colour, the waters dark and opaque. Almost—I see something large swish beneath the surface, and I’m careful to step away from the edge. I know what things lurk here.

Shattered Image
Blasting the music from her earphones couldn’t blot out the horror, the sorrow. The covers wrapped around her couldn’t warm the bone deep chill, or stop every cell from trembling. The images kept coming. She wanted to clamp her hands over her ears and scream, scream long and loud. Maybe then it would stop. Maybe then she could sleep.

The Depth
There it was. The lake where his little sister had drowned the previous year. The investigation had ruled her death a suicide but it was unlike her. He took his own life and left his son behind.
