Just One More
Stacey Chapman pulled hard on the cold metal of the gate. The rusted iron hinges resisted and it squealed as it moved. She winced at the sound as it cut through the quiet of the cemetery. She pulled hard again. It moved another six inches but would go no further. She glanced around to ensure she hadn’t attracted any unwanted company, then checked her watch. Twelve minutes until midnight. She still had time.

After all...I did make the cake
I let you have your cake and eat it too. I also asked if I could save myself a piece of yours for later. You didn't refuse. I lied and said I was craving for something sweet. You wondered why I had left the house at 4:00 AM to buy the ingredients for the fluffy delight. You referred to my unusual outing as… suspicious. I reassured you that there was nothing to worry about and that I just want it to express how much I loved you through the act of giving.

Sweetie
It is dark, with only a sliver of light seeping through the bottom of the door. I strain to see through the tiny keyhole and into the room. There was a large bed with a nightstand on either side. The sheets were in disarray, as if the bed hadn't been made in a while.

Lost Heaven
Jason’s calves burned to high Hell, and his thighs felt like they would burst open at any second as he climbed the stairs of the Statue of Liberty, thinking about the day he had gone to the shelter to pick out his dog, Marty, who was lurching up the stairs one after the other, breathing heavily, although it seemed that his old age was adding absolutely no stress to their situation.

Warmth
The breeze flows through my hair, passing my skin, leaving goosebumps all down my arms. The ocean waves crash on the shore, clapping to the songs that the seagulls sing. Their songs sound like lullabies echoing in the wind. The kids' playful screams fill our ears, and all we can do is smile and giggle. Everything that we have ever dreamt of happening, is happening right in front us, being seen with our own eyes. The sand flies in our food, over the sandwiches and the assortment of fruits. Your hands reaches for my thigh, looking at me with your wide grin. Your eyes, dark brown, but the sky allows them to glow and shimmer into a golden beauty.

If a Tree Falls. Second Place in Return of the Night Owl Challenge.
Day 1 “I keep losing things.” Sean felt uncomfortable sitting on this sofa. It was situated too low to the ground and its cushions were hard and flat. Sean’s therapist, Peter, sat in an office chair across from him with a notepad on his lap.

Clementine And A Purple Box
Clementine Jordan woke up in a familiar room, on a familiar bed, with a familiar balcony, and familar cravings, needs, and sorrow. Slowly opening her dark brown eyes, and found herself gazing up at a plain white ceiling. She wasn't curious, and she knew what had happened. Her arms and legs trembling at the thought of looking at him again, she turned her head to reveal a dead body that she had been laying beside for the night. She noticed the smell of fresh bread from the bakery downstairs that her apartment laid over in France. Every Sunday a man she loved once would visit Lacroix Patisser to catch up at breakfast with a cheese bagel and tea. His hand would touch hers to catch her attention, and his eyes were warm honey, and often locked into hers from afar, a magnetic attraction, which somehow felt like a coincidence but at some moments, with his eyes on hers, she wondered if that was possible, she wondered if he had ever looked at anyone like this before. Was his hand friendly touch? His smile, and his laugh. The creases in his cheeks and the shape of his jaw. His neck and arms, hands and height, she admired and daydreamed forever into infinity about him. But, there he lay, cold and dead, and shot in the back.
