There was only one rule: don’t open the door. I wrote it on the best piece of paper I could find with gilded gold edges and everything. Suppose you'll be pissed that I ripped it out of the back of your special edition Tolkien. Ah, well. What's the use worrying now?

Trapped
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. “Won’t you let me in?” Milo looked over the words scratched into the wall, reminding himself of what he already knew. It was a simple rule that had saved him countless times thus far, but his self-control was cracking. He padded over to the door, crouching to the floor to peak underneath. Bare toes coated in dirt and debris wriggled with impatience. Was a woman really standing on the other side? His hand trembled at the thought of slipping a finger under the crack to give one of the toes a poke. Just a small touch couldn’t hurt. Plus, he would be safe behind the door if anything should happen, right?

Which Door will lead to Safety?
There was only one rule: Don't open the door. Fig had told Mario and Anya. They saw from their bedroom window the water flood on their street. The power had gone off during the storm. Fig had candles and gave each child a flashlight. Some water had snuk into their kitchen and living room, even with the doors closed. But they knew opening them, the flooding would get worse.

What Lurks Below
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. Every girl here knew that rule and lived and breathed it. After one week of staying in this house, I started getting curious as to why no one dared to open the basement door after ten at night. We didn’t exactly know why we weren’t allowed. Yet we followed as if the rule was strictly life or death. The people who ran this safe house were of a peculiar type and had all kinds of strange rules we had to follow. If we wanted to remain here, we did as they asked. It was somewhere warm and comfortable, and most of us didn’t risk the chance of being tossed out into the darkness that was the real world. So we listened and obeyed diligently. Yet, just like it always does curiosity got the best of me. I needed to know why it was so important for the door to stay closed and locked at night. I asked questions to the other girls who had been there longer than I had. All I got for answers were blank stares and uncomfortable reactions, with the occasional “because they said so” response. The whole thing felt off and their reactions weren’t good enough for me. I needed real answers. Turning in my bed I noticed the clock read twenty minutes after midnight. Throwing on my sweatshirt I made my way downstairs until I found myself lingering by the basement door. After examining my surroundings my shaking hands clasped the knob and began to turn. The door creaked open and I found myself staring down a musty dark staircase. Adjusting my light I saw it. The reason why, or better yet the reasons why, and I had just released their souls for revenge.

On a Wing and a Prayer. Top Story - October 2024. Content Warning.
I started writing this as an entry into the SpookyMicro Challenge but soon surpassed the 300-word limit. I don't feel as though I can do it much justice if I slice and dice it down to qualify, though I might yet give it a go. So, here it is, in its original glory.

The Forbidden Door: A Tale of Secrets and Shadows. AI-Generated.
It was a simple rule, etched into the worn wood above the heavy oak door. Yet, for the young man, it held an irresistible allure. The room beyond was shrouded in darkness, its secrets tantalizingly out of reach. Curiosity gnawed at him, a persistent itch he couldn't scratch.
