Weeper's Ranch. Runner-up in Spooky Micro Challenge.
There was only one rule: Don’t open the door. Especially if the knocking stopped. Colby Jones was a wanderer, but when he heard how well the ranch job paid, he jumped at it like a cat with its tail a-fire. The tales that sent others away in droves had no effect on his determination. He expected to slip into the routine of work and rest as easily as a hand in a glove.

Conundrum
There was only one rule: don't open the door. For six months, Abraham Wilkes struggled with those words creeping through the labyrinth that was his mental state. He'd spent 11 1/2 years of his life working himself to the point of exhaustion and a mental breakdown. Growing desperate for it all to end, he'd tried everything from absinthe to prescription pills. The last episode involved him taking a broken bottle to his neck.

Heirloom
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. Well…that’s stupid, Alexander scoffed. Now, I gotta open it! He stood before the large door wrapped tightly in chains and partly covered in cinder blocks. No noises could be heard on the other side when he put his ear up to it --- only a dusty silence. Some of the cinder blocks had been pushed out from the door previously, perhaps by the fabled monster inside, but Alexander figured that was a prank pulled by other kids years ago.

Behind the Silent Door
Standing lonesome at the end of a tiny lane, where even the breeze seemed to hesitate, was a long-forgotten house. The ancient wooden door, closed for many years, exuded an unsettling silence. The house was the subject of rumors of paranormal activity and ghost sightings, so no one in the hamlet feared to go near it.

The Game. Top Story - October 2024. Content Warning.
My head throbs. As my senses begin to return, I realize I'm intensely cold - and I smell something burning. Not wood; more like – yes, like meat. A shudder overtakes me and I realize I'm naked, and somehow suspended, hanging by bound wrists, but my feet are flat on something. What the fuck?

Forgotten Seat
Megha had just transferred to Greenwood High, an old, prestigious school known for its academic excellence—and its odd traditions. Among them was one strange practice that caught her attention right away: the forgotten seat. There was a desk in every classroom, untouched and unoccupied, as though it had been left behind for someone who was no longer there.

Secrets of the Birchfield Cellar
Only one rule existed: do not open the door. Mother had often shut down my pleas for answers whenever the knocks grew louder. That section of the house was off-limits, and mother reminded me that the only way I could survive on this planet was by not coming anywhere close to the lower premises of the Birchfield Building.

A Door In A Field
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. It was hard to understand, because there’s nothing behind the door. It’s a regular wooden door in a wooden frame, in an empty field near the lake in our Community’s compound, attached to nothing. The bottom of the frame is braced with stone blocks, but there’s nothing else.
