I was drowning in the depths of depression when I first heard of The Lady of the Lake. Prior to that, my life was good. I was working as a Senior Writer at a well-funded start-up and was well in the running to become Chief Editor. The only other competitor I had was Jessica, a fellow writer who was also a very beautiful woman. Jessica wrote well, spoke well, and looked even better. Her auburn hair matched her eyes and tumbled like a chocolate waterfall past her hips. She was both sophisticated and svelte, possessing two Ivy League degrees as well as slim legs that seemed to go on forever. All in all, she was a formidable opponent, but that being said, I didn't think she was a match for me at all.
The Pond
As the late summer breeze blows through the dark and quiet forest, a middle-aged man woke up in his log cabin in the woods. He stretched in his bed, sat up, looked at his alarm clock, and saw that it was 3:30 A.M. He turned to have his legs dangling off his bed, yawned, and got up to get ready. He groggily walked to the bathroom. He struggled to stay awake as he relieved himself. As he washed his hands, he realized it was time for a shave. So he put the shaving cream on and started shaving at his chin stubble. He shaved each part of his chin carefully and slowly so as not to cut himself. After he finished shaving, he took a shower and washed his face.

I was mowing the grass when it happened. It was approaching July and Grandpa's property was small but in constant need of a cut. The rains had been numerous in the last few months, the lightning cutting the sky with long forks that shook the mountains most nights, and Grandpa's grass would be ankle-deep by next Friday if this kept up. I didn't really mind mowing the half acre that held Grandpa's house, but the acre in the down below that he also owned was full of stones and roots that would make the endeavor treacherous.
