Prologue:

It was a normal day in the tropical paradise of Costa Rica when he met her. Him spending a semester studying abroad. They say that Costa Rica is the most beautiful place on earth. There are more species of butterfly there than in all of Africa. A tiny little country, and yet diverse, glorious, and so full of beauty that nothing can really be compared to it. Yet, that day, he saw her, the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Even more beautiful, I dare say, than Costa Rica itself. Little did either of them know that she was about to end his carefree wayfaring life.

You see, Caleb John O’Hara had always been running. He was a “good man” as the world views men. He paid his taxes, worked hard, went to college. He was raised Roman Catholic, but had more or less fallen away. I say more or less, because he still believed in God, and he still held the same essential morals, but you would be hard-pressed to think he was actually Catholic. He didn’t go to church anymore, oh sure he always meant to go, but in the end he was just too busy with school, work, this, that, or the other.

On the other hand, Vanessa Elaina Rojas Moreno was a beautiful Costa Rican girl. Her sun-kissed skin was a perfect golden brown. The first thing Caleb noticed as he floated in the sweet, warm waters of Punta Una, was that sweet golden brown, and the long, black curls that flowed down from her perfectly oval shaped head. He leaped up from the water and came up to her, trying hard not to fumble over his words as he looked into her hazel eyes of delightful brown and green, eyes that looked as though they were diamonds, shimmering in that Costa Rican sand.

“Uhhh, Hola, mi nombre, Caleb, y tu?” He sputtered out. Vanessa smiled at him, her beautiful, full lips curling sweetly as her perfect teeth seemed to shine in the sun. Caleb thought right then and there, “I ought to marry this girl.” Through a flattered smile she said, “Nice to meet you Caleb, I’m Vanessa, and I speak English.” His heart felt like it was going to pound out of his chest when she spoke, it was the most beautiful voice he had ever heard. The two of them scheduled a date at one of the local restaurants. And over the course of the next three months, they fell in love.

Vanessa had learned English at the local Catholic school as a girl. She was a very faithful Catholic. And in the light of her eyes, Caleb felt drawn to the faith he had long ago forsaken. He was confirmed while studying in Costa Rica, and on the night of his confirmation, the pair became betrothed.

They moved to the United States together, Caleb had a hard time finding work, and ended up working for two delivery services, one called Shopperhelp, and the other called FoodNow. They lived in Vancouver Washington in the United States, they had two children together. And they began to attend one of the local Catholic churches. There was a beautiful church just up the street from their home. And they liked that the church was close, and faithful to the traditions they knew and loved. They joined St. Anne’s Parish, a small but healthy parish under the rector Mark D. Sullivans.

Fr, Mark, Vanessa, Caleb, and many others will factor greatly, but now that you know how they came to live in Vancouver, and how they came to know the people they knew, you are now ready, ready as you’ll ever be, to hear of the horror which befell this sweet family. A horror which would haunt them. A horror that all began shortly after Caleb got his job with ShopperHelp. Though, as you’ll soon see, ShopperHelp wasn’t at fault, nor was Caleb, rather, a dark force was at work in the whole affair.
