A Tale Inspired By “The Downfall” (Der Untergang) by Alfred Kubin, 1903

Introduction
I saw this brilliantly disturbing image shared by The Enchanted Booklet on Facebook here
This was a comment on the Facebook post, which added to the atmosphere

So I thought I would write a short, disturbing story
The music is "Falling" by Julee Cruise and David Lynch

She looked and did not care as she stood by the Lake of Lost Souls. She saw those in despair who had lost all hope, as they walked into the lake and disappeared beneath its dark surface, as motinless as death itself.
And she just watched.
Not all wanted to lose themselves, some tried to find their way out of that terrible place, to redeem their soul, but it held them tightly and would never release them.
Sometimes their hands broke the surface in their attempts to escape.
And she just watched.
She knew that they had despaired adn because of that could neverbe released from the Lake of Lost Souls.
The hands always sank back beneath the surface and wance more the lake looked calm, although below was a miasma of dark turmoil and fear.
She never moved
She was alwasy there.
And she just watched.
Forever.
