It is one of the legends that have become famous within the last fifty years. It is an urban legend told in the Philippines. Once upon a time, a lady lived with her family named Maria. During that period of time, money was so important, so she was forced to work in a condition where she also needed to work in order to run the family. She gets an offer to be a caretaker in Canada. There, she needs to look over an old man and take care of him. Maria accepted that offer and moved to Canada.

The old man and Maria became friends. The health of the old man started to depreciate. While the old man was on his deathbed, he called Maria and gave her a black stone. In the stories, it is said that the old man told Maria to swallow the stone. But it is told only in some stories. In every version of this story, the old man hands the black stone to Maria. It is common. She then moved to the Philippines after the death of the old man. Her husband started noticing changes in her activities.

She even cries some times, thinking about the old man. She even started staying in her room. She barely left the room. She even stopped talking with the people of the family. One day, her husband came home after a long day. Maria had cooked meat that night. While he was eating, he noticed that their children were not there, so he asked Maria about it. Maria pointed to the dining table and said they were there. But they were not here, so he asked her again.

So she pointed out the plate and said they were here. He was stunned to realize that Maria had killed the children and used them to cook the meat. Out of anger, he took the labo (a knife used to chop meat) and used it to scratch the face of Maria. That is the reason behind the name Maria Labo. He then went to take his gun from the locker to shoot Maria, but in the meantime, she escaped through the window of the house. It is said that she still stays in the forest. She learned many magic tricks. With the help of the magic tricks, she would change her appearance and eat the people that pass through the region that she lives in.

According to the other variations of the story, Maria went to England for a job where she worked under a vampire. Because of that vampire, only her activities and characters change according to the story. In another variation, it is said that Maria got killed in the place where she started working. The thing that came back to the Philippines was the ghost of Maria, which was angry. But the stories told in the first are very famous on the internet.

The other stories are created based upon the first story only. While looking at the origin of the story, we can say that this legend became popular only fifty years ago. Because during that period of time, ladies from the Philippines started moving to other countries to help work. This story might be based upon a lady who went to do a job abroad.

People also think that, until a certain point, this urban legend might also be true. The part till Maria comes back to the Philippines might be true, but the part that is said after that might be a made-up story. Because there is no physical evidence to prove this point, it is heard only from person to person.
