I, Henry Ballinger
To whoever finds this book, I beg of you to get rid of this as soon as possible. This book may seem like a dream come true but beware, everything comes at a price. I didn’t realize this until it was too late. I wrote this to try and warn people. If someone ever gives you anything from Madame Tchokasky’s shop, get rid of it immediately. Tear it, burn it, throw it to sea. However you see fit, just do it. Your future will thank you.

Borrowed time
Bursts of jazz played from the old radio filling the mortuary with a mix of music and static, as Omar Saint-Martin placed the last guest of the day on the chilly embalming table. She was a splendid brunette in her mid-twenties, with a glare that almost pierced through your soul. The music was now clearer, but still retained the occasional underlying wave of static. Omar had just put on his black leather gloves and apron; he could, however, not find or remember where his scalpel was. He rushed through his toolbox looking for it. Two minutes in his frenetic quest, he had finally retrieved it; almost cutting himself in the process. His macabre masterpiece had begun. Omar’s hazy mind constantly fought against the steadiness of his hands, forcing him to often cut his guest in unfocussed ways. This endless battle between intent and action had been raging for days.

Sabbatical
Sara and her mother were considering an opportunity. A seat was available at a prestigious seminar, and though it was across the country, it meant her mother could return for a year to her hometown on sabbatical. More importantly, it offered the possibility of peace from recent events in California, which, for their small family, and Sara’s mother in particular, provided a near-constant reminder of one tragedy or another.

WICKED LITTLE TOWN
CHAPTER ONE As I embed my fingertips into the keys on my laptop, I think about the year I encountered in a small, lonely grey dead-end town. My experience with this town was only a year, a year to realize there was only one way and that was turning the hell back.

Jewel of Despair

The Tethered Souls Of The False God
The house was stiflingly hot. A hot that prompts deep breaths to know there is air in the room, a hot that you think moving might relieve, only to encounter a resounding stiffness of the hot air. Mary-Beth lay on her twin mattress in the bare room, staring at the ceiling. A reality she was so adapted to there was little left to feel about it. She lifted her nude body from the sheet slowly and let her feet touch the wood floor of the old farmhouse. The floorboards were warm already. This is how she began her ritual. She spoke aloud as if Dale Fogs her bonded soul was still in this realm. “Good morning” came out of her mouth like a fastball, her voice echoing against the wood and plaster with no soft surface to catch it but the mattress. “Today I hope the sign is in the sky.” There was no one physically present to respond to the request. She looked out the window and saw the clear blue Colorado sky and the plains sprawling with grasses and tumbleweeds and dust. Despite her plea to the universe, she did not look to the sky. She would have to look out 3 times before she could expect a sign from him, and even then, it was possible she would see nothing today. In fact, the signs had all but ceased.
