The Room with the Green Door
Mr. Winthrop had a quite serpent-like appearance. He had an impossibly pointed chin which, in conjunction with his broad forehead and exceedingly thinning hair, rather gave his head the aesthetic of an upside-down cone. His nose was miniscule and flat, and at its point curved upward; it was so indiscernible from the rest of him that it presented itself as two thin, black ovals in the middle of his face. His left hand had been cut off at the wrist, and the wound had not properly healed, so the residual limb was misshapen and black from infection. His skin was yellowish and freckled, which as a little girl I found to be strange, but I now recognize as typical, after learning of the sun and its pigmentation of the skin. It was our complexion—pale to the point of near transparency, with a sort of pinkish tint and thin blue lines running throughout—which was the oddity. We usually saw Mr. Winthrop exclusively in passing; only on every ninetieth day, when the time came for us to be weighed and measured, would he spend longer than a minute or two in our wing of the Quarters.

The Self-Improvement Project
Money was hard to get after the pandemic. Being a college student who lives away from home is out of a job because it is nonessential. Practicing social-distancing wasn't too hard. Taking online classes was the only upside due to this situation. Finding a job was hard; I had multiple interviews for different jobs, but all of them had the same answer, "Sorry to inform you. We are currently looking into other candidates right now."

The Transporter
As Adrian got dressed in his black and white suit, he thought he would never be liberated from the clutches of these corpses. Five years had passed and he was still in the human remains removal business, or as civilians call it, cadaver transport. He had been called from the county’s Medical Examiner’s office to pick up a fresh one: William Stone, Caucasian male, early 40’s, 207 pounds, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He’d been hoping for a smooth night. No such luck. “It’s always the ones with the mid-life crisis,” Adrian thought to himself as he pulled into the parking area of the morgue.

The Haunted Doll Next Door
The real Annabelle versus the movie We all know of the famous possessed or haunted dolls that have inundated our lives with their disturbing stories plastered throughout the Internet. They have not only had movies based on their havoc-causing days but have their own occult following. Annabelle, the seemingly innocent-looking Raggedy Anne doll, is the first that would come to anyone's mind. Annabelle, a doll purchased in the 1970s, was given to a young lady named Donna. Soon after, the doll started to exhibit possessed characteristics, like moving around the place by itself and leaving childlike letters written in crayon. When the doll left scratch marks on a friend after spending the evening, they contacted the Warrens to assess the situation. They concluded that the doll was not possessed but instead was used as a conduit for a demon who would eventually inhabit one of the apartment occupants. The idea was to use the doll to take control of a person finally. The Warrens spoiled this plan by locking away this raggedy Anne doll in a glass case to prevent the demon that possesses the doll from escaping and rendering devastation on any other unsuspecting soul.

The Loop
I saw him standing in front of my building. He was larger than some—muscular. He wore a pair of long khaki shorts and a green collared shirt—I waved. He seemed friendly, familiar—maybe I’d seen him coming and going—Holy Shit!! He disappeared…he completely just vanished. Should I call the cops? Almost, in slow motion a little black notebook fell to the ground. The noise of the busy street faded—I heard the little black notebook thump onto the grassy square.

The Registry
John Hardt wasn't expecting anyone today when his faulty doorbell sounded. He never had visitors on Sunday mornings. He slipped on his sandals to go check the door, though he didn't want to get up from the couch in the middle of a news report about a local woman who mysteriously vanished and hasn't been seen for a week. Sure, he could've set the VCR to record it, but that would have required putting in a tape and making sure it was blank... more effort than it was worth.

Eating my experiences (27)
TOME 34 Mel lavished me in comforts I had long let go of, a proper bed in a warm room and fresh food. I nearly got lost in her charm before I went to visit Alex, who was kept in a windowless room away from all others. He had his hands bound and slept on a concrete floor. I rushed to his side, my new dress trailing behind me across the floor. Alex was under a thin cotton cloth shivering in the cold.

leave this place
“Today’s the day, right, Lauren?” I looked expectantly at my friend sitting next to me on the school bus, who was scribbling away in a small black notebook. She looked up and me and nodded her head enthusiastically, the two neatly tied puffs of curly hair on her head bobbing along with it.

BOOKIE
It was the hottest days of the year, just how I like it. Tensions run high for most in this climate, and personally that’s an environment in which I thrive. People make poor decisions when they’re stressed, and I love that. So, I set Stella up to rattle her own house of cards.
