I wasn’t ready to die. I knew that much. Maybe that’s all I ever knew, because there is no way in hell I could have told you one week ago that this is where I would fucking be. I’m not going to ‘take you back to where it all began’, but I will tell you one thing. If you find the book, or the book finds you, DO NOT TRUST IT. DO NOT OPEN IT. The book doesn’t care what colour your hair is, how many times you’ve fallen in love, the lullabies your mother used to sing when you were young, or if you even had parents at all. The book only cares that you drink it, letting the words trickle down your throat until they catch in your chest and flood your lungs leaving you gasping for more of the very thing that is causing you to drown. The book will submerge you, and you can only sink and wish you had heeded my warning, and not opened that goddamn book. Fuck it. No way in hell are you gonna put down the book now that I’ve hooked your curiosity. What’s that old saying? Curiosity killed the cat. You’re damn right. So, let me take you back to where it all began. What a joke.

Charlie's Weight
I have a nosebleed when the plane lands. That sense of lift you have when your balls try to run back into your pelvis, your heart skips in your chest, and your brain plays the rerun of Airplane Destination Death doesn't leave me even after the plane parks and the hostess tells everyone to unbuckle their seatbelts. I chalk it up to nerves. Right about now, my would-be father-in-law should be going up in a glorious blaze of purifying flames erasing his taint from the Earth.

It’s impolite to throw things at strangers
Rose was walking down Main St. on her way to work. It was so hot she could literally see her sweat sizzling as she hurried to get out of the sun hanging in a bright purple sky. The towering buildings that lined the streets swayed gently, but their subtle movements provided almost no breeze at all for pedestrians.

The Little Black Book
The day of work started pretty typically for Jacob. He arrived at the convenience shop for work at 8:05(a couple minutes late per usual), consumed a cup of coffee and a donut, and then found his post behind the cash register, to begin idly flipping through a book of sorts while awaiting customers. Though nothing out of the ordinary had stirred quite yet, Jacob had the feeling that something miraculous was to occur that day. A slight upbeat apprehension that stirred his insides. Yet he sat and waited, unfazed.

The Job's Not Done
Time was running out. I had the bag packed, the rest of the cash and a one way ticket across the country. Everything else I’ll figure out when I land. I left that damned battered black book on the nightstand, turned off the lights and slammed the door behind me. After throwing my bag in the back I hopped in the driver’s seat and threw the car into reverse. As I hit the road, I felt a wave of calm start to wash over me, relieved I defied the odds and was in the clear. I pulled up to a four way intersection, slowly creeping forward and saw no one in any of the directions so I proceeded to cross. Just as I was in the middle, a black SUV careens into the front of my car, sending me spinning, only to be stopped by a tree.

Sketchbook
He didn’t have any definitive evidence however he knew the tree moved. It was not possible for a tree that stood over two stories high and having a base more than four feet in diameter to move however this one did. Since moving into the farmhouse a week ago every afternoon he sat on the back porch and sketched the entrance to the forest in his Moleskine sketch pad. Stephen now reviewing his sketch would say with some confidence that the tree moved precisely four feet to it’s right. Prone to fantastical thought he hesitated to tell his wife and once he saw her reaction, he immediately wished he hadn’t. Without words he could hear the word relapse come from her. She was always supportive and understanding of his fluctuating mental health, it’s why they moved away from the city with the hope that the new scenery would help alleviate some of the stress and allow him to focus on finally getting his anxiety and delusions under control.
