Darker Than Midnight
Darker than Midnight The world is so stupid or at least I always felt that way. As I zoned out in history class twirling my hair, I thought about what life would be like if the cursed hadn’t shown up. They came about twenty years ago in 2018. They can turn anyone they want into one of them. Out of fear society has become strict. We have really harsh laws now. Like we can no longer have more than two kids in order to keep the population low. For some reason the government thinks that will reduce the number of infected. I really despise this rule, honestly, but not because I plan on having kids. But because when I was 6 my parents were going to have another child. They already had two, me and David. It wasn’t on purpose, their birth control failed. Mom continued working as a nurse while pregnant, but her co-workers noticed her symptoms. Because one of them reported it, a police officer stormed into the house. He made her take a pregnancy test, but he wouldn’t let her go into the bathroom alone in case she cheated. The test was positive. So the officer dragged David out of his room and shoved him in line with me.

The Doll and The Room
A porcelain doll in a white dress, arms reaching to be held by someone; imprisoned by the room that held it now. Undisturbed and forgotten, left to rot and waste away. The smell of mold and rot filled the air as dust slowly drifted through shafts of light coming from the window. A rocking chair in a corner creaked as though it were raising its head to see who had entered the room.

Heart in the Hallows
There is the deadbeats and the dead, the living and the lost. Sorting people into those categories may seem like a waste of time, but that is where you and I differ. I am forever sorting people into categories; kind and crude, this and that, wrong and right, sane and insane...whatever seems to fit the cause. People fit the mold, and if they do not make the cut, they are either tossed in the trash, or made to break to fit in.

The Taken
When the rains come, the howls ascend like rancid fire. It begins with one or two and then spreads like a fire amongst them all. Like wolves calling in the hills, but without unity or purpose. Wild vocalizations without control, like a rage forced through damp chords of flesh crushed from them by an unseen hand. A haunted bellow of something utterly lost. A nothing calling to nothing.

Like a watch
People are like a watch. Eventually ceasing to function at the end of time. I have always believed in death as a wonderful thing, a definitive resting point, others will fear it and part of me understands why. The unknown is treacherous. Nevertheless, from the unknown, we learn.

Clockwork Heart
"My Dearest, I no longer remember the date, and I have written countless entries to you. Honestly, I am beginning to doubt we will ever be reunited, but I hold onto the dregs of hope that one day I will hand you this ragged diary and hang your necklace around that lovely neck of yours once more. Perhaps on that day, you will decide you do not care to read through the miseries I have traversed since our parting just before the H Day when everything went to hell. If you do... I will not apologize for the actions I have taken, regardless of how cruel or morally disgusting they may be. Every action, every fight and struggle, has been to get back to you my dearest heart. My only regret is not being by your side to offer you whatever shelter and protection I could in those chaotic early days. I hope you are safe. I hope to find you soon, slim as the chances are. I will not stop searching until I find you or my last breath.

Widowmaker
I could feel the life draining out of her with every passing second. My hands wrapped tightly around her throat, our eyes locked, adrenaline coursing through my veins. It was kill or be killed, but there was one thing I couldn’t shake as her convulsing spasms finally abated.
