The Well at the Shrine: A Lesson in Belief and Science BY:Khan In 1904, Hazrat Khawaja Hasan Nizami (RA) recalled an incident that left a deep impression on him—a story that still feels like a tug-of-war between faith and science. One day, a gentleman approached him with a suggestion. Near the shrine of Hazrat Khawaja Nizamuddin Auliya (RA) in Delhi, there was no fresh-water well. The only available source was a baoli (stepwell) whose water was brackish. “If you permit,” the man said, “I could dig a well near the eastern gate of the shrine. Perhaps fresh water will be found there.” Hazrat Hasan Nizami agreed. “Yes, fresh water here is a real need. Perhaps you’ll strike sweet water.” The man hesitated. “But there’s one problem. The ground around the shrine is full of graves. If we dig, we may disturb them.” Hasan Nizami gave a practical reply: “If any bones emerge, collect them respectfully and bury them elsewhere. Water is essential, and as long as we handle the remains with care, there’s no harm.” With this understanding, he left for Allahabad while the man began digging. As the work progressed, the laborers followed his advice. Whenever bones surfaced, they were carefully removed and reburied nearby with respect. But as the well deepened and they neared water, something unusual appeared. Deep in the earth lay the complete skeleton of a man. Unlike the upper graves, where bones had decayed or broken, this one was intact. Even its posture seemed undisturbed. The workers froze in fear. Why was there a full skeleton so far down? Who could have been buried at such depth? When the laborers refused to touch it, the man overseeing the work decided to handle it himself. He tied himself to a rope, took a pickaxe, and was lowered into the well. His plan was to break the skeleton’s knee joint so it could be lifted out piece by piece and reburied elsewhere. But the moment his pickaxe struck the skeleton’s knee, something extraordinary happened. His fair skin turned black before the workers’ eyes. His speech became incoherent, like that of a madman. The worker assisting him quickly tied him to the basket and hauled him up with great difficulty. A crowd had gathered by then. All were astonished—just moments ago, the man had been normal, and now he looked dark and disoriented. He kept crying, “I broke my nephew’s leg! I broke my nephew’s leg!” Despite the efforts of renowned spiritual healers, no cure worked. Finally, on the third day, the decision was made to abandon the project. The well was filled back in with soil and bones until it became level with the ground. Almost miraculously, the man’s complexion returned to normal, and his mind regained clarity. When Hasan Nizami returned from Allahabad, his wife narrated the whole story as he lay on his bed reading a newspaper. “Do you know why he turned black and went mad?” he asked her. “It’s obvious,” she replied. “He disturbed a saint’s grave. The spirit punished him, but when the grave was restored, the spirit forgave him.” Hasan Nizami shook his head. “No, that’s not it. The skeleton had been buried for centuries. Bones contain phosphorus, which is poisonous over time. When he struck the bones, the gas escaped. He inhaled it, it entered his bloodstream, turned his blood dark, and affected his brain. That’s why he appeared black and deranged. “If spirits could punish, then why didn’t one punish me? I gave the order to dig the well and disturb the graves. Shouldn’t they have punished me instead?” His wife gasped. “Astaghfirullah! Don’t speak like that!” But Hasan Nizami continued, “Women have weak faith. I don’t believe spirits can harm us like this.” Annoyed, his wife said, “Enough! Go back to your newspaper. I won’t listen to such things.” He laughed and returned to reading. Barely five minutes passed when something astonishing happened. Lying on his back, he suddenly felt as though an electric current had been attached to the soles of his feet. It spread through his entire body like a shockwave. The sensation was unbearable, like knives cutting through every vein. He screamed in pain, but his wife and mother-in-law—sitting nearby cutting betel nuts—continued chatting, as though nothing had happened. He called out to his wife by name. “Habib Bano! Look at me! Something’s happening! The spirit has taken hold of me! I repent! I’ll never disrespect saints again!” But still, they ignored him. In desperation, he turned on his side, thinking perhaps his heart was under strain. But the pain only grew worse. He began praying for forgiveness over and over again, promising never to doubt again. And then, just as suddenly as it began, the sensation moved down to his feet and vanished completely. He called his wife again, and this time she responded. “You were asleep,” she said. “Your newspaper fell from your hand.” “But I wasn’t asleep,” he insisted. “For five minutes I was in agony. I even heard you both talking about this and that.” “Yes,” she said. “We were talking. But you were asleep.” “If I was asleep,” he asked, “then how did I hear every word of your conversation?” She had no answer. And Hasan Nizami ended the story with a reflection: Perhaps scientists can explain this. But for me, it remains a mystery—an encounter between faith and reason, and a reminder that some questions are not so easily settled.

It was just past midnight when I accepted the ride request. I’d been driving for hours, my eyelids heavy, my patience thin. The city had gone quiet, the kind of quiet that presses against your ears and makes you too aware of your own heartbeat. The pickup point was a dimly lit street on the edge of town. Streetlamps flickered weakly, fighting to push back the shadows. I pulled up to the curb, scanning for my passenger. At first, I didn’t see anyone. Then, from the darkness between two buildings, a man stepped forward. He was tall and thin, wearing a black coat that seemed too heavy for the mild night. His face was pale, almost gray in the glow of the dashboard lights. Without a word, he opened the rear door and slid inside. “Uh, hey,” I said, forcing a friendly tone. “You John?” He didn’t answer. He just stared ahead, eyes fixed on the back of my headrest. Awkward silence filled the car. I glanced at the app. Normally, the destination pops up immediately, but this time the screen was blank. I frowned and tapped it, thinking my phone had frozen. The GPS blinked, recalculated, and suddenly a route appeared—no address, no name, just a glowing blue line leading out of town. “Guess you’ve already got a place in mind, huh?” I joked, trying to mask the unease crawling up my spine. No reply. I started driving, the tires crunching softly against the empty road. The man sat motionless, hands folded neatly in his lap. I checked the mirror more than once, half-expecting him to vanish like a bad dream. Minutes ticked by. The city lights faded behind us, replaced by long stretches of highway swallowed by darkness. The GPS arrow guided me deeper into nowhere. “So,” I tried again, “you heading home from work? Visiting someone?” Still nothing. My throat tightened. His silence wasn’t just rude—it was heavy, unnatural, like a void that sucked the air out of the car. After twenty minutes, the highway narrowed into a two-lane road flanked by dense forest. No houses. No gas stations. Just endless black trees swaying in the wind. The GPS arrow pulsed calmly on the screen, leading me deeper. I risked another glance in the mirror. His eyes met mine this time. They were wrong. Too dark. Too still. I jerked my gaze back to the road, heart hammering. My palms were slick against the steering wheel. “Listen, man,” I said, forcing a laugh I didn’t feel, “if you don’t tell me where you’re going, I’m turning around. This ride’s getting weird.” That’s when the radio crackled to life. Not music. Not static. A voice. Keep driving. I froze. The man hadn’t moved his lips. But the voice—low, distorted—filled the car, bleeding through every speaker. He’s waiting for you. The hair on my neck stood on end. I slammed the radio off, but the voice continued, softer now, whispering directly into my ear though no one was beside me. Almost there. The GPS dinged. “Turn left,” it instructed. I slowed, headlights cutting across a narrow dirt path disappearing into the woods. My stomach clenched. “Nope,” I muttered, spinning the wheel to keep straight. That’s when his voice finally broke the silence. “You missed the turn.” Cold. Flat. Not angry, not pleading—just stating a fact. I pressed harder on the gas. “Ride’s over,” I snapped, trying to sound braver than I felt. “You can get out here.” His reflection in the mirror smiled. But in the back seat, he wasn’t smiling. He wasn’t even moving. I blinked hard, eyes darting between the glass and reality. Reflection: smile. Reality: stillness. My vision blurred. The forest road stretched endlessly ahead, though I knew the highway should’ve ended by now. The GPS recalculated again, the line twisting back onto itself, leading me in circles. “You can’t leave,” the man said softly. “Not yet.” I slammed the brakes. The car screeched to a halt, gravel spitting under the tires. Heart racing, I spun around. The back seat was empty. The door had never opened. Chest heaving, I scrambled out of the car, sucking in sharp, cold air. The night pressed close, thick with silence. I grabbed my phone to call someone—anyone—but the screen glowed with a single notification: Rider picked up. Drop-off in progress. And beneath it, the time: 12:00 a.m. The exact moment I’d first seen him. I looked back into the car. The rear door hung wide open now. A shadow stretched from the seat to the ground, long and unnatural, pointing into the trees. I didn’t wait to see what cast it. I jumped back behind the wheel and tore down the road, headlights shaking as I sped through the night. But the worst part? The app is still running. The ride has never ended.

January 6, 2598 | 11:15 a.m. Saturday late morning Gun powder filling the air with the sickening sweet scent with a copper undertone is how I remember it. How I remember the fighting, or rather the war that was being waged on innocent lives. The government's own military turned towards the civilians they were supposed to protect, many defected to keep their solemn oath. The ones who continued to follow blindly cut down their own as well as the ones they swore to protect. The key to stopping that from happening is having a strong resistance to leaders such as that. Is that why she is familiar to me? Did she fight by my side in some form of resistance? Was that when I met her? Is it when Sorina first came into my life? I had to take a break before I coming back to the research. Seeing that photo. I couldn't place it. I knew her. I just knew that I had seen her or met her before. It was only when I decided to take a moment to take a deep breath as I closed my eyes for a moment. As I exhaled I began to remember that I did know a young vampiric woman that was called Sorina. Whether or not that was her actual name was another issue altogether. This freedom fight, or resistance leader as some would call her, was the spitting image of the vampiric woman I had met. At that time Sorina was around 300 or so. I doubt this would be an offspring, nor would it be a descendant of the human bloodline from her. From what I recall, Sorina's entire human bloodline was killed off due to some situation of the times. She was rather vague on that. The more research I have been conducting shows me that she hasn't changed one bit. She was known as the most compassionate, empathic, as well as fierce leader of the resistance. I wish I could say that I am surprised, yet I am not at all. From what I remember, Sorina was always the first person to run into the burning building to save anyone that was left inside. She would make sure that every single person was safe, not to mention give the shirt off her back to make sure those around her were taken care of. Give. Give. Give. There was nothing she wouldn't do to make sure everyone had a fair chance. Seeing that she was one of the first to start fighting was no surprise. One article stated that the kind leader had began fighting for one reason alone, she saw a child crying. That alone would set most sensible people off, myself included. I believe even the most apathetic person would fight for a child. I should know considering I feel that I am highly apathic at this moment in my life. Digressing once again. I swear that will most likely fix itself. Where was I? Right. Sorina and the resistance. She never does anything without a purpose. Throughout the articles, every journalist tended to agree that Sorina was the one leader to trust above all else. Mostly because she had the kindest heart. Her husband, Valo, stayed at her side. Silent, stoic, and a force to be reckoned with. I couldn't tell you if he was human or not.
