she's been here a long time
She’s been here a long time. Years beyond counting. She’s seen children sleep away their first night upon this Earth in the nursery, painted with gentle flowers and washed silver by the moon.

It arrived one day with the rest of the mail. Bills, a magazine for LL Bean, and the notebook. Tucker brought it in and tossed the pile carelessly onto the kitchen table. We rarely opened the mail anymore, so it quickly got buried under a newspaper, Ella’s abandoned homework, and – I’m ashamed to admit – a decent amount of crumbs.

WARNING: Gore I stare up at him in awe while but inches beneath the water, his image is disfigured by the waves and ripples, but in my mind, I can picture his beauty. I see his curly brown hair soaking up the ocean spray and his gloomy brown eyes sparkling in the sunlight. Captain of a crew he is; Captain of a ship. The pork was the only way we survived those last few days before the soldiers from the west arrived. Momma said it was better the soldiers from the west arrived and not the bad soldiers from the east. She said they didn’t have any dignity. I don’t know what dignity is, but Inge said the soldiers from the east were raping all the women. I know what that means.

"Did you honestly think you could run away?" Kriven looks down at me in contempt. I smirk up at him and spit blood out on his shoe. There is no way I am going to let him see my fear, to do that would be like waving a steak in front of a hungry wolf. I just need to hold on a little bit longer.

Woke up in a bathroom stall again. Every day is the same. My so-called “friends” were the top-ranking students in schools, and I was always below them. They will take me to the bathroom after lunch and use me as a punching bag for their “entertainment” and relief their stress from studying. During the rain, it gets worse because they are not able to go outside.

What is this? I have no business accepting this. I'm just an English major student, and not a very successful one in the grand scheme of things. Doesn't the term, "Cs make degrees" mean anything to anyone? Was there some sort of competition? A lottery? Did students just get selected randomly? Not that I'm complaining or anything. I'm just stating the facts here. Student loans need to be paid and I need the cash. The letter that came with the package:
