June 9 Movie Review

What happened on June 9? Not even I had a clue.

June 9 is another found footage film with a very straight forward type of setting. June 9 was directed by T. Michael Conway. What happened on June 9? Would be the tagline for the movie as we follow a group of teens led by Derek spending summer fun going on a haunted scavenger hunt in their small town of Boston Mills. The teens get into some mischief looking into old, haunted places and they stumble upon a type of cornfield place with this weird family living there. The movie does start off strong with showing you screaming and people being chopped on a box tv. After that we just follow the teens in their mayhem around the town until the fateful day of June 9.

The movie does come out bland after the opening sequence as you just follow the teens to some of these places. The way is feels bland is just how slow the movie can feel when leading up to the big finale. They smoke cigarettes and mess with the creepy family a lot. I just powered through the movie because in the end I felt I got no answer to what the big deal was about June 9. I do not wish to spoil much about movie, but nothing was really explained. The characters were not people to really feel bad for because their pranks came with consequences. The only way you get a sense of the characters is through their interactions and one character having some type of common sense when things get too chaotic.

The people in the town were really vague. Some characters popped up that didn’t even contribute to the creepy family. The movie just felt like so much was happening, but not much was explained. The creepy family really had no back story to them. The only real “backstory” to this family is the land was home to a old woman who murdered her children with a hammer. After that it is just a family on the farm obviously not meant to be messed with. The only really mentions of anything supernatural happening is when the camera glitches out from the yellow stained color the camera films in. Another instance in the movie that was out of place was this little girl on the walkie-talkie . She would say some creepy things on walkie-talkie and that is it. No diving deep into it or if it came from the family just a creepy little girl.

For a found footage film, we always see the same tropes with teens getting into things they shouldn’t and then bam now everything is going downhill. It is hard to really grasp what makes a found footage film good and make a story worth telling. The movie could have felt more fleshed out if there was a better backstory on that weird family in Boston Mills. Why is June 9 so significant in this town? Was there any ways they stopped it? These were questions I had after the movie when I just felt so much confusion. I am not sure if that was the goal of the director or he meant for something more to have been made for the movie. The movie is not a horror movie. The mystery is very subtle as certain things happened to remind the viewer this movie is meant to be creepy.

In my opinion, I would skip out on this movie. If you enjoy giving movies a chance just to see something new then that is your choice. The movie will be a slow burn and probably confusing. It is just not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. It is on Tubi and Amazon Prime for streaming.

I recently acquired a collection of old movie posters, and I must say that they perfectly capture the feel of the golden age of cinema. These old-fashioned movie posters at https://www.cvtreasures.com are a charming throwback that showcase the artistry and originality that are sometimes missed in today's film promotion. Every poster tells a different story, brings back memories, and transports us to a time when going to the movies was a special affair.
