Haunted Castles

Haunted By a Headless Ghost

Reichenstein Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to the 13th century. The castle was built to protect a neighboring village. According to folklore, the castle was protection for a robber baron named Deitrich von Honhefels and his nine sons. When they all got captured Honhefels pleaded for the pardon of his sons but his request wasn't granted. All of them including Honhefels were decapitated and buried in St, Clement Chapel found within the castle. Now the castle is haunted by the headless spirit of Honhefels.

Guarded By Dead Knights

Eltz Castle is a Medieval castle found in the hills between Koblenz and Trier on the Rhine River. The site is still occupied by the original family who built it and is one of the few German castles that has never been damaged in any way. Local legend has it that the ghosts of dead knights guard the castle and it has become a tourist attraction but no photos are allowed to be taken within the castle.

Finding Frankenstein

Frankenstein Castle is the stuff nightmares are made of and can be really scary. The castle was built in 948 BC and is known for being home to the Frankensteins. The name is probably very familiar to horror movie fans who have seen the old horror classic "Frankenstein." Konrad Dipple Von Frankenstein is the last of the Frankensteins to have lived here. For the curious, yes, he was an alchemist, a grave robber, and a scientist. It is not known if he ever tried to create the well-known Frankenstein monster but he did try to reanimate the dead. Legend has it that the people of the town stormed the castle but during this time Von Frankenstein took poison and died in his laboratory. Now his ghost haunts the castle and can be seen especially at Christmas and New Year's.

Other Haunted Locations

Nazi Ghosts

Conn Barracks is known as Schweinfurt by the locals living in Munich. During WW II it was a mental hospital for Nazis and eventually became the living quarters for US soldiers in 1945. The US soldiers had spooky tales to tell. Supposedly the spirits of the Nazis never left the barracks and a Nazi soldier and a nurse who were covered with blood could be seen watching the soldiers as they slept. In 2014 the barracks were returned to the German government.

Locked Away Forever

Spandau Citadel in Berlin is a spooky place with the spirit of Anna Sydow. She was the ex-lover of Joachim II, who was a 15th-century ruler. On his deathbed, Joachim asked his son to look after Sydow, but instead, the son put her behind bars. That is where she stayed and now her ghostly spirit roams through the halls unable to leave the citadel. She has become the infamous White Lady.

Sounds Of a Nun Weeping

Wessobrun Monastery has a library with the famous works of German poetry, the Wessobrunn Gebet and prayer as well as other short works. These poetic verses were written before 814 AD since the death of Charlemagne is noted in one of the manuscripts.

This monastery is also known for being one of the most haunted sites in Germany. In the 12th century, a nun who had broken her vows went into hiding in the underground tunnel. Being locked inside the nun starved to death, Now her spirit roams the hallways of the monastery and visitors have heard her weeping.

Haunted Nature

Bloodstained Rocks

Osnabrück Hünenbetten is the site of a pagan temple where according to legend the troops of Charlemagne were sent on a mission to convert the inhabitants of the temple to Christianity. Unfortunately. It all ended with a bloody massacre and many pagan priests were killed. Aftward, the troops destroyed the largest altar stone. Now people who come to this area say they've seen bloodstains on the ricks and can hear the terrible screams of those killed especially at the time of the winter solstice and the summer equinox.

Slaughtered Animals

In Kirchlengern there is a forest where unexplained things happen. These happenings date back to the 12th century. Those who walk through the forest here seem not to be alone and have feelings bordering on panic. Animals suddenly disappear from the town and their fur and blood are found in the forest.

The Haunting Of the Black Forest

The Black Forest is surrounded by castles, monasteries, and ruins. It is also the forest of the tales by The Brothers Grimm. This area has become one of the most haunted sites in Munich. What haunts the Black Forest? It depends on how active your imagination is but local folklore tells tales of ghosts, witches, werewolves, and even the devil. Isn't this the spooky forest where in one of Grimm's fairytales Hansel and Gretel found the gingerbread house of a witch?

A very disturbing story is that of der Grossman. This is about a man supposedly with many arms and bulging eyes. It is said that he makes children confess to their sins when they enter the forest and the most naughty of children are never seen again.

Red Glowing Eyes

Plaueninsel or Peacock Island located southwest of Berlin is a well-known historical park. It is a tranquil place with lots of wildlife but it also has a dark side. According to stories the 17th-century alchemist Johann Kunckel haunts the area. The spirit is a frightening black figure with glowing red eyes. It is thought that he experimented with black magic in his laboratory on the island and became cursed in the afterlife. Most of the sightings of him happen at the stroke of midnight.
