There are hundreds of haunted places in the world. But I wanted to look into some local places. Or at least semi-local places, so here are twelve haunted places you can find around New England.

  1. New Hampshire State Hospital in Concord, New Hampshire. This hospital was built in 1842 and was originally known as the New Hampshire Asylum for the Insane. It was built to look as nice as possible, and it seemed to work. Families thought that their loved ones would be treated very well. However, that was far from the truth. The hospital quickly became overcrowded and underfunded. Patients were also kept in cages for “their own good.” Instead of trying to rehabilitate patients, the goal became to keep the mentally ill away from the public. Apparently, the agonizing sounds of the patients can still be heard.
  2. Nancy Brook in Jefferson, New Hampshire. In 1778, there was a woman named Nancy Barton. She had run out into the woods one night to chase after her fiance, who happened to run off with her life savings. Nancy was found soaked and frozen at the side of a brook and was buried around that area. The woods are still haunted with her screams.
  3. Judge Corwin House in Salem, Massachusetts. Also known as the Witch House, this home once belonged to Judge Jonathan Corwin. This man oversaw the execution (or I guess more accurately, murder) of nineteen people. Corwin and his wife did have five kids, who all ended up passing away. Which many people think led to the haunting of this location. There have been reports of cold spots, touches on the skin, and disembodied voices.
  4. Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast in Fall River, Massachusetts. You probably know the rhyme. “Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother forty whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one.” People believe that Lizzie murdered her father and stepmother despite being acquitted. Those who work and stay there say there are footsteps and a floral scent. Some have even reported a woman’s face appearing on the basement wall.
  5. Seaside Tuberculosis Sanitorium in Waterford, Connecticut. Built sometime in the 1930s, this sanatorium specialized in treating kids with tuberculosis. Over the years, it changed into various other facilities before it was closed permanently in the mid-1990s. It now sits abandoned and people report hearing patients inside the building.
  6. Baka-Hack in Pomfret, Connecticut. Ghost towns and New England don’t usually go together. Yet we have one right in my home state. Ruins and cellar doors are all that remain in this town. Baka-Hack was settled in the 1780s around a flax mill. It ended up being abandoned before the Civil War. People have seen a ghost baby in a tree and phantom horse drawn wagons. There have also been reports of disembodied voices.
  7. Olson House in Cushing, Maine. The house was built in the late 18th century before becoming home to Christina and Alvaro Olson. It is believed that they are the ones haunting the property. People have heard footsteps and doors opening and closing throughout the house.
  8. Kennebec Arsenal in Augusta, Maine. This property was once a mental institution, so you can probably imagine that patients weren’t treated very well. The hauntings the occur today happen because of the mental anguish the patients went through.
  9. University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont. The campus is home to many ghosts, and there are some who “belong” to certain buildings. Converse Hall is haunted by a former student who was electrocuted in the late-90s. He’s known to turn radios on and off. Red Stone’s ghost is said to hold ill will towards female students, some of whom have been chased out. Just to name a few.
  10. Laurel Hall and Mausoleum in Cuttingsville, Vermont. There is a statue of a man named John Bowman near the said mausoleum. People have reported that it seems like he tries to gain entrance to the tombs, where his wife and two kids are buried. Right across the way sits the mansion where they live. It’s said that within the hallways you can hear an infant crying.
  11. The Hotel Viking in Newport, Rhode Island. This hotel is known to have residual hauntings. (Residual hauntings tend to be like memories. They don’t interact with things around them and tend to show what happened when the person or people were alive.) There are sounds of a party happening above the old ballroom, cold spots, footsteps, and flickering lights.
  12. Southeast Lighthouse in Block Island, Rhode Island. The lighthouse is home to a real life murder. The keeper threw his wife (nicknamed Mad Magggie) down the stairs during an argument. He did end up going to jail, but Mad Maggie stayed at the lighthouse. Maggie has supposedly thrown things, locked people in rooms, and chased them out of bed. And it might be no surprise to learn that all of her victims have been men.

You know what? I'm one of those who loves to read horror, write horror and watch it, but am not frightened - when everyone is screaming, I'm saying 'oh c'mon,' but the photo at the top jerks my adrenalin! Oh my, is this guy a relative? Judge Corwin ?? Lizzie Borden, what a tale. I definitely would not want to get locked into the lighthouse with Mad Maggie. Good Story!!
