DYING For Answers: The 6 'American Horror Story: Roanoke' Questions We Still Have!

It is all over for another year; Butcher Bates, Scrathcyhat, and ginger Evan Peters all shuffled off this mortal coil to be replaced by #AmericanHorrorStory Season 7. So did the finale of Season 6's Roanoke wrap everything up in a neat bow? Well, not exactly.

Almost as much of a head scratcher as #HBO's #Westworld, if you expect Horror Story to leave the Roanoke house behind, you will be very, very, disappointed. The usual run of #RyanMurphy's horror anthology closes the door on each self-contained season as we look forward to next year, but with Roanoke being the black sheep of the family, that was never going to be the case. Here are the six sickening questions from Season 6 that will still be haunting our nightmares long after Roanoke is just another ghost in the machine.

Where is he?!?

Matt Bomer, the horror hunk with the washboard abs. We here at Movie Pilot have spent many a heated debate clawing around subreddits and pausing credits to ask, "where the f*ck is Matt Bomer?" Despite confirming that he would star in at least two episodes, the 39-year-old was conspicuously absent from the series's sixth run.

Having appeared in Freak Show and Hotel, many would have hoped for a last-minute appearance in the finale. It comes alongside the conflicting reports that Finn Wittrock would play his most f*cked up character ever this season. It seems there have been some crossed wires over at AHS HQ. Alas, much like the Roanoke actors, Matt Bomer is just a ghost of the season.

2. Who is Emily?

Lee Harris: part hardened killer, part devoted mother. However, for a woman so enamored with her daughter Flora, the show was quick to forget about her other daughter Emily. Yeah, you remember the one. Back in "Chapter 3," the missing Harris was mentioned by pseudo-psychic Cricket Marlowe. It looked like the Emily story might lead to some kidnapped child tangent, but no, she is just another Bomer this year.

Emily could just have been a plot device for Cricket Marlowe to prove his psychic powers, but then as all that was reenactment, it might not even have really happened anyway (keeping up?). Considering that Flora was Lee's motivation, and reason she sacrificed her life, it seems a bit out of sorts they would just abandon her second child. In a show where everything from a surname to a book quote can point to a whole different season of the show, it just seems like lazy writing.

3. What was the point of Lady Gaga?

Yes, I know that she pulled in a shed load of awards for Hotel, and her return this year was one of the most talked about bits of AHS news, but was it really worth it? The promise behind GaGa's role as the original Supreme Scathach had huge potential, but the character was practically reduced to that one episode of her backstory. Even with "Return to Roanoke" there was no GaGa to be seen, and we didn't even find out who played the "real" version of Scathach.

A great Meta-Murphy move would have been GaGa as herself being the actress who played Scathach; sadly, it wasn't meant to be. If you look at the show's credits, GaGa actually only appeared in three episodes, so that is more than Matt Bomer (RIP), on a tie with Evan Peters, but less than Denis O'Hare. Surely we could have squeezed one more appearance out of Fame Monster, or maybe was she busy playing Donatella Versace for American Crime Story?

4. Was Edward Mott evil?

Perhaps the best performance of the season belongs to Evan Peters; c'mon, we always knew it would be. However, his turn as the seemingly kind-hearted Edward Philippe Mott was all reenactment, so we do feel a bit cheated. When the show returned to Roanoke, post-twist we saw Monet, Audrey, and Lee try and escape through the tunnels under the house. There we met the demonic figure of the "real" Edward Mott. The original Roanoke survivors claim that ghost Mott helped them escape the clutches of The Butcher and co., but this version didn't look much like he was helping anyone.

If the Peters version of Mott had helped them, then why would the other version not follow suit when they returned to the house? We know that the original Matt, Shelby, and Lee lied about their time in the house, but it never made sense why they would say a benevolent Mott would have helped them. The roaring ghost that we saw was not in the Casper ranking of friendly ghosts.

5. Where were the return to Roanoke ghosts?

Frustratingly, the finale was extremely light on our favorite stars. I know it is usual Horror Story policy to have the finale focus on a smaller group, but are you really telling me no more Evan Peters until Season 7? Adina Porter's heroic end as Lee became just another foolish decision of the season, and her final showdown/SWAT team standoff seemingly came out of nowhere. The fast-pace of the earlier half of the episode ground to a halt with Lee and Flora's mother/daughter exchange, so there was plenty of room for the other famous faces to return.

As we saw Cricket Marlowe and the Spirit Chasers team massacred by the Roanoke ghosts, where were the deceased Audrey, Matt, Shelby, and Monet to save the day? We know the rules, Ryan Murphy: You die on the property, your spirit becomes trapped there. It might have been soppily out of character, but having Lee and her co-stars walk back into the burning house as ghosts together could have been a great Titanic-esque ending.

6. What will next season be?

As ever, all eyes were on the finale for a clue as to where the show will go next; Horror Story is expert at scattering clues through its complex web of episodes. Murphy specifically said that the finale would give us some big hints to where Season 7 is going. Well, unless It is American Horror Story: TV Channel, "Chapter 10" didn't give us a lot to go with.

With Murphy already behind American Crime Story, it is doubtful we will be going down the "real" crime line, so your guess is as good as ours. Past guesses have been cruise ships, Oppenheimer bombs, and summer camps, but all have been completely off track. Then there is the rumors of that "secret" season, or the upcoming Murder House/Coven crossover. The finale was too packed with fictional courtroom dramas and in-depth interviews to notice anything else that could even hint at Season 7.

BONUS: How is Lana Winters still alive?

Sheeeee's back. Sarah Paulson was dual-rolling again and it looks like they put on some more prosthetics and gave her that croaky voice (again) for Lana Winters. But what is her secret to a long-lasting life? Taking on two serial killers, being locked in an asylum, then taking a gun to the face for a hillbilly at 78; that woman must be using more than just Clarins. Will anything ever be able to kill Lana Winters?

However, let's not be too harsh on "Chapter 10." We did finally see whether Lee would pay for her crimes, Lana's stellar interviewing techniques, and the uber-meta reference to all those Horror Story reddit theories.

The finale may have just been the tip of the puzzling iceberg, as Roanoke served as a Where's Waldo of missing characters and plotlines, but as we wave goodbye to the burning embers of the Roanoke house, it is a bitter-sweet farewell.
