Could We See the Resurgence of Nemesis in Resident Evil: Final Chapter?

Spoiler Warning: The following article contains speculation and potential spoilers for Resident Evil: Final Chapter.

The last chapter in the Resident Evil saga is approaching quickly. We've been waiting years for the Resident Evil franchise to pick up where Resident Evil: Retribution left off and we finally have our first look at how the Resident Evil saga will conclude with the trailer reveal for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is going to be the most explosive Resident Evil film yet. Just from the screenshots in the trailer, we can already see there will be massive zombie confrontations, as well as some familiar faces returning to wreak havoc on the world one last time. And of course it's up to Alice to once again save everyone. Alice has been used time and again as the savior of humanity, becoming a pivotal character in the main construct of Resident Evil despite there being no video-game basis for her character within the Resident Evil universe. In past Resident Evil films, Alice was always the saving grace in the end. She may have had help from her friends, but in the end, it was always Alice doing the heavy lifting. The same seems to be true of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

Alice's Old Friend?

Alice (Jovovich) is once again the hero of the story, but that doesn't mean she'll be alone on her journey. For one, we know that she'll be accompanied by Claire Redfield (Ali Larter) and some other unidentified individuals, but is it possible that another familiar face might show up in Raccoon City as well?

With Jovovich's co-cast from Resident Evil: Retribution all meeting untimely deaths off-screen (e.g. Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield), the post-apocalyptic world has left Alice on her own. However, there may be someone else whose been highly overlooked in the Resident Evil universe since Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and he could be returning as well.

Did Nemesis Survive the Events of Resident Evil: Apocalypse?

The person I'm referring to is Nemesis. Before you stop reading, hear me out. Nemesis appeared to die during the conclusion of Resident Evil: Apocalypse but his death was never fully actualized; it was more of an implied death. Especially when no one ever really dies in the Resident Evil universe, more specifically Nemesis. It would take a lot to kill Nemesis, which could see him making it out of Resident Evil: Apocalypse alive, but then we have to take in to account the nuclear bomb that was dropped on Raccoon City towards the conclusion of the film. Regardless of the almost guaranteed death of Nemesis, he could still return in a different capacity.

Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen) is Back From the Grave?

In the trailer, we can see that Dr. Isaacs has also been resurrected and is back to his maniacal ways, but how can that be when we clearly saw him die during Resident Evil: Extinction? The final act of Resident Evil: Extinction saw Dr. Isaacs meet his end at the hands of Alice's clone — his entire body was mutated by the T-virus and then cut into pieces by a laser grid set off by Alice's clone. There should be no coming back from that, but it appears that Dr. Isaacs is alive and has returned for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

The most plausible explanation for Dr. Isaacs' return is that the hidden Umbrella facility within Raccoon City has created a clone of Dr. Isaacs. But the more intriguing explanation which would also credit the idea of Nemesis returning, would be writing off the version of Dr. Isaacs who died during Resident Evil: Extinction as the clone. While the original Dr. Isaacs remains alive and well off-screen, hidden in another Umbrella facility.

Could Nemesis Have Been Cloned By Dr. Isaacs?

Following that line of reasoning, it would be reasonable to believe that Nemesis could have been dug up and cloned after the events of Resident Evil: Apocalypse as well. Under the circumstances of Dr. Isaacs hiding away in another underlying Umbrella facility within Raccoon City, he could've had plenty of time between the events of Resident Evil: Apocalypse and Resident Evil: Retribution to dig up the rubble around Nemesis, pull out what's left and begin to clone him. Although Dr. Isaacs may get more than he hoped for with Nemesis if he decides to clone what's left of Nemesis / Matt Addison.

There's no telling what could happen if Nemesis has been cloned and returns in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. It's possible Nemesis will retain some of his past memories as Matt Addison, potentially interrupting the programming installed by Umbrella and Dr. Isaacs. Once again breaking the control just as Nemesis has done in the past. But even without Matt's memories, Nemesis is the type of character who doesn't obey orders. If Dr. Isaacs attempts to control a cloned Nemesis, he'll likely wind up in the crosshairs of Nemesis as well — speculative for the moment.

Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen)

Regardless of how Nemesis is brought back to Resident Evil, it would be an intriguing element to integrate into the story when Alice has been the only soldier capable of having any affect on the survival of humanity since the beginning of the Resident Evil story. Were Nemesis to return to Alice's side, she would have all the help she needs in defeating her adversaries, Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) and Dr. Isaacs. I forgot to mention that Albert Wesker is back as well.

Albert Wesker Is Also Back, Hopefully He Dies for Good This Time

Albert Wesker is another character of the Resident Evil universe who has also died within canon of the story and been mysteriously resurrected, setting a precedent for the same occurrence to happen again, maybe for Nemesis this time.

There's enough evidence to back up the prospect of Nemesis returning, but nothing in terms of official confirmation. Although, we can reach further into the realm of speculation by presuming that one of the (BOW) Bio-Organic Weapons seen in the trailer could be the remnants of Nemesis resurrected by Dr. Isaacs. But the more plausible identity for that (BOW) would either be for Wesker to become infected by another virus which mutates him further, or Dr. Isaacs himself has bonded with a virus that allows him to shape-shift on command. Whoever it is, they'll likely be the final monster for Alice to fight through in order to save humanity. But will Alice be able to do what's necessary in the scenario of that (BOW) being her old friend, Matt Addison / Nemesis?

RE: Final Chapter, Bio-Weapon.

Predictions

The events of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will undoubtedly conclude with Alice riding off into the sunset, as was always the destined course of events. But as to how Alice gets to the end of her journey will be the most intriguing chapter of her journey yet, when we still have no idea how she'll play into the conclusion of the story that began with her covert operations at an Umbrella facility. Hopefully the Resident Evil saga concludes on a defining point, providing the audience with some closure for the 10 plus years following Alice's journey through the post-apocalyptic world of Resident Evil. Yet, we still have questions that won't be answered until Resident Evil: The Final Chapter premieres.

Will Alice be able to save humanity or will her efforts simply be for the small population of people left on Earth? Could the hidden Umbrella Facility within Raccoon City be the key in resurrecting humanity? Or could a cure have been hidden by Dr. Isaacs — the key in resurrecting loved ones — thought to be dead? Anything is possible within the realm of Resident Evil, evident by the inability of dead characters to stay dead. What are your thoughts? Leave them in the comments section below.
