Why?????

Sorry for the photo, I asked for Carrie and got cats, this is their idea of telekinesis.

My first thought when I saw an advert for this series was simply, why? Was it lazy or bravely creative? I forced my self through 2 episodes , then I will rely on what my wife has told me about it. I think going forward you will see the same problem we had with the Bohemian Rhapsody film. I knew the Queen story and new the film was more fiction than fact, She didn't know the history so loved the film.

With Carrie I have read the book and seen the original film, so I knew very quickly the remake was lazy fantasy with Carrie as its name. It appeared that many of the aspects of the film/book were used, just in a totally random order. Also to stretch a 90 minute film into 8 episodes meant a lot of stretching points and making up a load of other things. Even my wife complained it was slow and long winded .

You start with a fire, you then have vox pop from various characters who describe Carrie in different ways. The program then jumps around the timeline like it was a trampoline. You see Carrie meet her neighbour, you see the shower scene in a pg13 style way and you see the death of her father. Carrie shows well how mother has isolated her from the world, the problem is that its now todays world. Mother is a conspiracy theorist, anti computers and a user of mobile phones. Its a very different from the world mother fought against the first time.

There are numerous shows of Carries special abilities from very early on. Including at one stage crushing a car by waving her hand at it. We also get plenty of the schools teachers, an affair between 2 of them and then 1 killing himself for a dodgy secret. We have the lives, loves and losses of her class mates and more padding then a teenage bra.

Eventually we get the end to the story, at least the one that was intended. Blood, locked doors, kill teacher, burn everyone, go home and finish her tale. This isn't the first film to get get dragged into a series, I suppose its quite rare to get something that keeps original parts from Stephen King book. To answer my own question, its lazy. Take a film/book , stretch it, pad it and add bits of the story as you go along. I was going to make a joke about wondering when we get misery the movie. Then I remembered castle rock, at least its a different story. I don't mind doctor sleep following on eventually from the shining.

At least probably not as bad as films made from video games, especially low quality and low definition ones. Minecraft the movie anyone? at least the Lego ones didn't take themselves seriously.

I presume half the problem is too many channels and not enough to fill the times. If you look through any streaming platform you will see a massive amount of older programs, along with little new. Granted it costs more and more programming, but at least and try to be original. Maybe less police stuff, a little less hospital stuff would be a start. Less using a 50 year old story as your basis for something new. It could have been so much better, and so much shorter.

Go read a modern book and try to use them. Go find the next Harry potter or similar, just make it new and original.
