Ever since childhood, he had always hated church. The priests always preached in Latin, so he never understood a word they said, although he remembered some phrases from prayers and hymns like "Pater Noster" and "Adeste Fideles",but he still didn't know what they meant, though they were ingrained into his psyche by the constant utterations of the priests.

Once he left home and school, he vowed he would never enter a church or any place of religion again.

So what was he doing here?

It must be a dream, or more likely a nightmare.

Now he was sitting in a huge church that he didn't recognise. He was the only one there, and there was no sound. He did not know how he came to be there. There did not seem to be any doors, or if there were, they were so far away that he could not see them.

There were windows high up, but it was dark outside. The only light came from candles, so there must be someone about, but there was no sign. As he got up to try and find a way out, there was a splash. The floor was covered with a few inches of water. He walked towards the altar, but did not seem to get any closer. The water was getting deeper, almost up to his knees.

He needed to get out, mainly because he had never learned to swim.

Then he noticed a door with steps leading up. As he got closer, he realised it was a spiral staircase leading up into the spire of the church. He knew this was a dream, but he did not want to drown in his dream, so he started up the stone steps.

He was claustrophobic and did not like heights. He had to keep going up, and then something unexpected happened. It was like the church had been hit by an earthquake, and he was in the part that would crash down and crush everything below, as well as himself inside it.

There was no hope of escape.

Then he felt he was moving up.

The spire was taking off like a rocket.

From a narrow window, he saw the earth falling below.

He knew this was a nightmare. He wanted to wake up.

The spire kept moving, so he kept ascending the stairs, wondering if he would find a pilot or wake up.

He saw satellites and eventually the moon, and then that was left behind.

Wake Up!! Wake Up!! This is total madness.

The spire sped on .... and on .... and on... until

He woke, and he was floating in space. He was awake. This didn't make any sense. Did that really happen? Was he still in the dream? You cannot breathe in space, but he was awake and floating back down to earth.

He woke again.

He was in a padded cell and in a secure straitjacket.

This was worse than the nightmare. What had happened to him?

The door opened, and someone came in.

They: "So, how was that trip? Are you willing to pledge yourself to the cause now?"

He held a tray of bottles and needles.

Him: "What is the cause? I have just suffered one of my worst nightmares, and I don't know why. Why haven't you just asked me?"

Them: "I see you are going to be difficult again, and we don't have time for your questions. All you have to be is compliant and question nothing, and the first thing you do is start asking questions. I am afraid we are going to have to give you an increased dose"

With that, they filled another syringe and injected him.

Consciousness slipped away, and he was back in the middle of that empty, huge church......
