Here are some old and newer movies for your next movie night that have a great plot within a genre that has taken to relying too much upon jump scares. Here are some real thrills; that is, if you're brave enough. ;)

1. 'Psycho' (1960)

Based on a novel by Robert Bloch, this Hitchcock classic from 1960 features the infamous character of Norman Bates and a girl who checked into the wrong motel. What it lacks in color and special effects it more than makes up for in suspense, creepy dialogue, and storytelling that is lost in most modern horror movies. The last scene is sure to give you chills, and you'll never forget the Iconic shower moment. Psycho is still a relevant classic over 50 years later.

2. 'Scream'

This movie from the 90s will keep you guessing who the killer is the entire show. If you're a true fan of horror you can appreciate the many nods and references to classic horror throughout the film. This movie acknowledges the nuances of the genre and is in some ways a satirical portrayal of horror itself. If you're in the mood for a slasher flick this one is thrilling, funny, and one of my all time favorite movies.

3. 'IT' (2017)

This movie is based on Stephen King's novel. The plot of this movie is utterly engrossing as children desperately try to rid their town of evil. The character of Pennywise the clown is borderline disturbing and sure to frighten. The protagonists will have you laughing as IT has you screaming.

4. 'Halloween' (1978)

While there was a remake of this film, the original is an utter classic and cannot be beat. The score to this movie is iconic and helps to make the movie what is. The backstory of Michael Myers makes him much creepier when he escapes the mental hospital on Halloween night. The words of Doctor Loomis, "You can't kill the boogeyman," are enough to remind one of their own childhood fears, and give some validation to fear on Halloween night.

5. 'It Follows'

This movie is unique; there isn't anything out there with a story quite like it. A girl, after sleeping with her date to a movie, is told that now something is following her. It won't stop until she is dead or she passes the curse along. This movie is one that can get in your head, and have you checking over your shoulder every few minutes.

6. '10 Cloverfield Lane'

This movie is on the line between horror and psychological thriller. The premise? A girl wakes up after a car accident in a bunker chained to a radiator. A man walks in and he tells her there has been an attack and the air is no longer safe outside due to radiation. Is he telling the truth? Is he lying? This movie had me on the edge of my seat, and is very much based around dialogue and suspense. The plot is substantial and thrilling.

7. 'A Quiet Place' (2018)

This recent movie is great whether or not someone likes the horror genre. In a world where monsters attack sound, one must be totally silent. The silence of the movie is scarier than the words and music of typical horror films. This is well done and the story is interesting and frightening.

8. 'Cabin in the Woods'

This genre film is intriguing and not what one would expect when you begin watching. This movie is funny and does a great job of making fun out of some of the idiosyncrasies of the horror genre. However, even if the references elude you, this one is an entertaining watch. When a bunch of college kids head to a cabin in the woods nobody suspects they are simply pawns.
