In times like the present when real life is becoming more and more like a horror movie on a global scale, we could all do with a good laugh. If conventional comedy isn't your style and you like your humour with a side of blood, guts and monsters, I feel you dude.

If you feel like you could do with a frightful themed pick-me-up then join me and explore 13 of the funniest comedy horrors that will make you shriek with laughter, and maybe fear too.

13. Dark Shadows

Tim Burton's 2012 movie Dark Shadows stars Johnny Depp as 1700's vampire Barnabas Collins. He is cursed into becoming a vampire and imprisoned underground by his ex-lover and witch. Decades later Barnabas accidentally gets freed and returns to his home, to find life a lot different than what he remembers. One thing from his past that remains is the witch that imprisoned him, and now she is the most successful woman in town. The story follows Barnabas as he tries to save his dysfunctional descendants from bankruptcy, win the heart of his love, and defeat the evil witch. All this, while trying to adjust to modern life. Absolutely hilarious.

12. The Dead Don't Die

This is the first zombie film on the list that features icon Bill Murray, but not the last. Also starring Adam Driver as a police officer alongside Murray, The Dead Don't Die is set in a town called Centerville. In the town, unusual and concerning events start to occur that no one is able to explain. The strangest and most deadly occurrence being that the dead start rising from their graves and the locals find themselves battling off the hordes of hungry zombies.

11. Dead Alive/Braindead

In 1992's Dead Alive, also known as Braindead a young man called Lionel lives with his tyrannical mother. He attempts to date a beautiful girl from the local store but mummy isn't happy about it. After following Lionel and his girl on a trip to the zoo, his mother gets bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey. The bite makes her unwell and kills her. Then, brings her back to life but not like Lionel remembers her. His undead mother now has a hunger for animals, people and even her own body parts when her ear falls off into her dessert and she chows it down with her custard. More undead zombies end up coming together in Lionel's basement and it is up to him to save the day.

10. Army of Darkness

Also released in 1992, Army of Darkness is the third instalment of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead Trilogy. Bruce Campbell starts as Ash, who gets transported back in time to the year 1300 AD. While there it is up to him to defeat an army of the undead and recover the Necronomicon so he is able to return to his home. Army of Darkness is classic horror comedy cheese and doesn't get old.

9. Rubber

Rubber is by far the most ridiculous entry on this list. in this 2010 movie a car tire comes to life in the desert and goes on a murderous rampage, using telekinetic powers to make people's heads explode. The homicidal tire goes on the run from the police and when they find it, authorities come up with a plan to lure the tire to its doom.

8. Lesbian Vampire Killers

Lesbian Vampire Killers stars the hilarious duo from Gavin and Stacey, James Corden and Mathew Horne. In the movie, two friends spend a night in a rural town and meet a group of girls on the way to a cottage which they have been directed to by the locals. They have been sent there as a sacrifice to the Lesbian Vampires that plague the town, and because of an ancient curse every girl in town is destined to become one of them on her eighteenth birthday. This movie is absolute trash in the same way that a lot of low-budget, cheesy horror movies are. That being said, it is funny. It doesn't include award-winning or clever humour but it is trashy and silly and sometimes that is exactly what you need.

7. Shaun of the Dead

Shaun of the Dead is the first instalment of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's Cornetto Trilogy. Pegg and Frost are a hilarious pair in all of their movies together, but Shaun of the Dead is up there with the best. Shaun is attempting to win back his ex-girlfriend, at which point the zombie apocalypse hits. Can he save the world and get the girl? He's got a plan.

Take car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phil, grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over.

6. Beetlejuice

A cult classic from Tim Burton, the story follows a couple that have died and their souls are confined to their house, unless they want to be prey to giant sand worms. An insufferable couple move in with their strange and unusual daughter. The couple are trying to scare the couple out of the house and call upon the malevolent Betelgeuse for help, which ends up being a really bad freakin' idea. To this day, Beetlejuice contains one of the funniest musical scenes in a movie and it has a good dose of cheesy scares too.

5. Happy Death Day 1-2

Happy Death Day follows college student Tree as she gets murdered by a masked killer. She wakes up and gets murdered again, and again, and again. In order to break the loop she must discover the identity of her killer. The movie has a good balance of suspense, murder and comedy and is even a bit emotional at points. This movie impressed me a lot more than I had been expecting it too. The sequel, Happy Death Day 2U is one of a select few movies where the sequel is just as good and just as funny as its predecessor.

4. Zombieland

Here we have the other zombie move featuring Bill Murray, albeit in a minor role in this one. 2009's Zombieland is probably one of the more popular movies on this list and it's totally understandable why. In the zombie apocalypse a solitary guy trying to get to his parents hitches a ride with a stranger. On their trip they encounter two sisters who join them on their travels. Together, the group take on zombies to survive their cross country trip and end up bonding and become a strange, hilarious and dysfunctional zombie killing family.

3. The Lost Boys

1987 vampire movie The Lost Boys starring Kiefer Sutherland is another cult classic. Two brothers and their mother move in with their grandfather in Santa Carla, where vampires lurk in the shadows. One of the boys gets tangled up with the vampires in pursuit of a girl and his brother enlists the help of two boys from a comic book store to help save him. 80's cheese, vampires, humour and an excellent soundtrack. What more do you need in a movie?

2. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

Harmless hillbilly friends Tucker and Dale are taking a trip to their run down cabin in the woods when a group of college students also in the area believe the pair are trying to kill them. The college kids take matters into their own hands and poor Tucker and Dale get enveloped into a brutal, bloody and hilarious misunderstanding.

1. Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse

A zombie accidentally gets released from a research lab, meanwhile three teenage scouts are having their final camp-out. Two of the boys plan to quit because they are too old to be scouts. While Augie enjoys it and wants to stay, Ben and Carter would rather be going to parties with alcohol and girls. On the night of the camp-out they get invited to one such party, much to Augie's frustration. The boy's differences of opinions about the scouts are pushed to the side when zombies start popping up all over the place and killing people, including their scout leader. The movie follows the boys attempt to survive, and it had me roaring. I am absolutely on board with any movie where a zombie sings Britney Spears.

I hope some of these movies can help put a smile on your face during this worldwide pandemic panic, even if just temporarily. Don't let yourself get emotionally bogged down by the real world horrors, take some time off and submerge yourself in fictional hilarity and horrors instead.

I would love to know what your favourite comedy horrors are! What would you have included on this list? Let me know @curiouslycreepy on Twitter and @creepyandcurious on Instagram.

Stay creepy and curious, ghouls.
