Sometimes reality overcomes even the most powerful imagination. The following list deals with strange cases and unsolved murders that caused such a sensation in public opinion that Hollywood decided to make them into movies.

Here are 10 of them:

1. When a Stranger Calls (1979)

In 1950, then 13-year-old Janett Christman was working as a babysitter, but when the child's parents returned home, they found a window broken and Janett's lifeless body covered in a pool of blood. Her murder was so gruesome that it inspired the urban legend of the "babysitter and the killer," which has since been adapted into several horror films.

2. Scream (1996)

In 1990, Danny Rolling, also known as the Gainesville Ripper, murdered five female students in their Florida apartments over four days. He committed all the murders with a knife. These gruesome murders were the inspiration for Ghostface, one of the scariest villains of all time.

3. The Strangers (2008)

A quadruple homicide in a cabin in the woods of California was the inspiration for the film. And why not; There's nothing scarier than thinking you're somewhere alone and safe until you realize you're not.

4. The Exorcist (1973)

In the 1940s, 14-year-old Roland Doe began showing claw marks on his body while objects in his room were being moved by an unknown force. His family tried to leave the place where they lived, but the "evil" followed them. A priest's testimony about the exorcism he performed on Roland provided the material for the novel that inspired the film of the same name.

5. The Conjuring (2013)

In 1971, a couple moved into an old Rhode Island farmhouse with their five daughters. Then, scary things started happening. The family was "haunted" for nine whole years, which sparked the interest of two paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, whose story the film deals with.

6. Zodiac (2007)

Those who love crime stories are already familiar with the Zodiac Killer, a serial killer who killed many people in Northern California in the 60s and 70s while sending coded messages to the police to confuse them. The case remains unsolved to this day.

7. Silent Hill (2006)

In 1962, there was a coal mine fire in the town of Centralia, Pennsylvania, which is still burning today, 59 years later. Since then, the town has become a ghost town, although many now consider it a tourist attraction.

8. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(1974)

Ed Gein, also known as "The Butcher of Plainfield", was the inspiration for this film's villain, Leatherface. Gein killed two women and dismembered their bodies, as well as other corpses he stole from cemeteries while using their skin and bones to decorate his home.

9. Annabelle (2014)

Ed and Lorraine Warren, the researchers who inspired the movie "The Conjuring," also examined a doll that appeared to move. This doll, named Annabelle, is now kept in a US museum. The first doll-themed movie was so successful that two more sequels were released in 2017 and 2019.

10. Jaws (1975)

In 1916, several people were killed in shark attacks near the Jersey Shore in the USA. The killings led to a shark hunt and the closure of area beaches until someone finally killed the shark. This story inspired the novel Jaws, which was released in 1974, and the Steven Spielberg film, which was released the following year.
