Cracking the Code of Oppenheimer's Enigmatic Secret City
"Now I am become death.” “The destroyer of worlds.” P.O. Box 1663 was listed as a Santa Fe, New Mexico address in 1943. And over the next few years, about 300 babies had it listed as their place of birth on their birth certificates. Because the real location was a secret. Everything sent to that P.O. box ended up here: 33 miles from Santa Fe at a site also known as P.O. Box 180, Project Y, and Los Alamos, New Mexico. A secret city had been built there. And it was home to a community of scientists. “Scientists of many nations.” The scientists who created the first nuclear bomb. They lived a couple of hundred miles from the site where their invention would be tested. “New Mexico desert.” Trinity. How did laboratory director J. Robert Oppenheimer end up building a town and testing the first nuclear bomb here?

Some myths about the middle ages
Step into the pages of medieval Europe, a realm shrouded in misconception and mystery. Often depicted as a land populated by unwashed, sword-wielding knights who dined on spoiled fare, adhered to a flat Earth belief, gallantly defended chastity-belt-clad maidens, and reveled in the grotesque torture of their adversaries, this portrayal is more the stuff of fiction than historical reality. Delving into the origins of these myths and contrasting them with the actual historical landscape of the Middle Ages uncovers a nuanced picture of a bygone era.

Before anesthesia was a thing
In the 1830s, the surgical theater witnessed a remarkable spectacle as Scottish surgeon Robert Liston prepared to enact a swift and efficient amputation. With medical students poised to assist and onlookers curious to witness, Liston initiated a rapid sequence of movements. The patient's flesh yielded to his blade, and in quick succession, he sawed through the tibia and fibula. In a matter of minutes, the amputation was concluded. Yet, this was an era when surgical interventions were a symphony of suffering, for anesthesia was not yet a ubiquitous ally in the operating room. Patients bore the torment of surgery with consciousness, acutely aware of each cut and sensation. The quest for anesthetics capable of inducing a state of unconsciousness and facilitating meticulous procedures had commenced long before Liston's swift endeavors.
