Searching for the Truth

Started life in chains, my mother and my father were bound. And I never thought I would be able to escape. But everyday being bound only made me think of freedom even more. Because you can't keep the dreamer from dreaming, you can't stop the heart from beating easily and you can't undo the truth about life. Yes I do believe there is a God. And I do not believe he meant for me to be in chains. All my life I would dedicated to fighting for others. We need truth not tales. We need truth not lies. We need truth. Truth is I was born a slave. I was brought and sold. I was taken away from my family and made to serve others. The truth is I was enslaved because of the color of my skin and for nothing else. The truth is my people weren't freed because they were thought of as property. The truth is I fled with my daughter. Oh no she will not be bound and chained. She will not be beaten and mistreated. I will not let this continue. The heartache that my parents faced will not be my heartache. Even in a world that has not known my people. A world that has not recognized the humanity of my people. I will not let my daughter faced another day in that struggle. Some say I am a preacher. Some say I am a minister. And though my voice is low it is strong. I am a woman who was first named Isabella. I was once captive by this world. But I prayed to God for that change. I prayed to God for that truth. The truth that keeps the heart moving. The truth that keeps the feet walking. The truth that keeps the hands moving. And I believe God did not cause this trouble. I believe it is from the devil and men blinded by hatred, violence, and greed. The truth is they took my son but I got him back. I fought hard in court to save him. Illegally they took him from me but I did not give up I did not back down I did not quit. And he was freed. The truth is if I could do this then others could do this. If I could move mountains for my own then others can move mountains. If I could go down valleys then others can go down valleys. My life is a testament. It is an example. It is proof that I have a purpose. I am more determined now. And Isabella will be my name no more. I am Sojourner Truth. I will speak the truth. I will abide with the truth. I am about the truth. I know who I am. I know where I came from. I know what grief my people bear. I know what anguish they face. I know what agony they have been through. My life is proof. Listen to my story. Listen to me. How could a former slave save their son and still be freed? How could a former slave runaway free with their daughter and still be freed? I am not afraid to speak for my people. I am not afraid to stand for something. For I have been in their shoes, walk in their path, and bear their resemblance. I am Sojourner Truth. Without the grace of God, without his mercy, I would not be here. And I believe he sought me a woman. And ain't I a woman? Look at my story. Look at my life. See from my eyes see from my perspective. Walk in my shoes, go down my path, Ain't I a woman? Standing for truth, equality and justice. And proving we are equal.
