The Palestine issue is a deeply entrenched and multifaceted conflict that has persisted for decades, defying easy solutions and causing immense suffering for both Palestinians and Israelis. At its core lies the struggle for self-determination, land, and sovereignty, with historical, political, religious, and social dimensions interwoven into a complex tapestry of grievances and aspirations.

The roots of the conflict can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries when waves of Jewish immigrants began arriving in Palestine, then under Ottoman rule, spurred by the Zionist movement's aim to establish a homeland for the Jewish people. This influx intensified tensions with the indigenous Arab population, leading to sporadic violence and clashes over land and resources. The situation further escalated with the Balfour Declaration of 1917, in which the British government expressed support for the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine, despite the presence of a large Arab majority.

The Nakba remains a seminal event in Palestinian collective memory, symbolizing the loss of land, homes, and livelihoods.

Subsequent decades saw a series of wars, uprisings, and peace initiatives, including the Oslo Accords of the 1990s, which aimed to establish a framework for a negotiated settlement and the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. However, the Oslo process faltered amid mutual distrust, violence, and disagreements over core issues such as borders, refugees, and the status of Jerusalem. The construction of Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, deemed illegal under international law, further complicated efforts to reach a resolution, as they encroached upon land intended for a future Palestinian state and undermined the viability of a two-state solution.

The Gaza Strip, a densely populated enclave under Israeli blockade since 2007, has become a focal point of the conflict, enduring repeated military offensives and humanitarian crises exacerbated by severe restrictions on movement, access to basic services, and economic opportunities.

The ongoing blockade has contributed to dire living conditions and heightened despair among Gaza's residents, many of whom are descendants of refugees from the 1948 war.

Efforts to revive peace negotiations have faltered in recent years, with both sides deeply entrenched in their positions and internal divisions further complicating matters.

The Trump administration's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and relocate the U.S. embassy there in 2018 sparked widespread condemnation from Palestinians and Arab countries, who viewed it as a violation of international consensus and a blow to their aspirations for East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Amidst this backdrop of conflict and despair, grassroots movements, civil society initiatives, and international solidarity efforts continue to strive for a just and peaceful resolution to the Palestine issue.
