In January 2005, NASA launched a unique space probe called Deep Impact. Its mission was to help scientists understand where Earth's water came from. After traveling about 270 million kilometers, the probe reached a comet that held secrets scientists had been searching for over centuries.

Earth is the only known place in the universe where humans can survive naturally. It contains all the essentials for life: water, food, and oxygen. But about 5 billion years ago, Earth did not exist.

The Birth of the Solar System

Before the Solar System formed, the region was occupied by a giant molecular cloud made of gas and dust. This cloud contained particles of sand, silicon, and various metals. It was formed from the remains of dead stars that exploded and scattered their material throughout space.

The cloud was enormous—about 100 light-years across.

Gravity caused the particles within the cloud to attract each other. Over millions of years, these particles collided and merged. The center of the cloud became hotter and denser until it eventually ignited and became our Sun.

The remaining material around the Sun formed a rotating disk from which the planets, moons, and other Solar System bodies were created.

How Planets Formed

Scientists first proposed the idea of planets forming from a cloud of gas and dust in the 1700s. Later observations with advanced telescopes confirmed that stars are born inside molecular clouds.

Experiments performed on the International Space Station in 2003 showed that small particles in microgravity tend to stick together. Scientists believe a similar process occurred in the early Solar System.

Dust particles gradually combined into larger bodies. Once these objects reached about 1 kilometer in size, their gravity became strong enough to attract more material.

Over millions of years, around 20 young planets formed. These bodies frequently collided and merged, eventually creating the planets we know today, including Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Earth.

Early Earth and the Magnetic Field

The young Earth was extremely hot, resembling a giant ball of fire.

As Earth formed, heavy elements such as iron and nickel sank toward the center. The movement of molten iron inside Earth's core generated a powerful magnetic field.

This magnetic field created the magnetosphere, which protects Earth from harmful solar radiation. Without it, life would have had little chance of developing.

The Giant Impact and the Formation of the Moon

Evidence gathered from Apollo Moon missions suggested that the Moon was once part of Earth.

Scientists believe a Mars-sized planet called Theia collided with Earth about 4.5 billion years ago. The impact was so powerful that it blasted molten material into space.

Over time, this debris came together and formed the Moon.

The collision also tilted Earth by about 23.5 degrees, creating the seasons we experience today.

Without this tilt and the Moon's gravitational influence, Earth's climate and oceans would be very different, making life much more difficult.

Where Did Earth's Water Come From?

One of science's biggest mysteries has been the origin of Earth's water.

NASA's Deep Impact mission targeted a comet called Tempel 1. On July 4, 2005, a copper impactor crashed into the comet at high speed.

Analysis of the debris revealed that the comet contained large amounts of water ice.

Scientists believe that billions of years ago, countless water-rich comets and asteroids were sent toward the inner Solar System by the powerful gravity of Jupiter.

Many of these objects collided with Earth, delivering vast amounts of water.

Evidence from ancient zircon minerals suggests that liquid water appeared on Earth roughly 4 billion years ago, about 500 million years after Earth formed.

The formation of Earth involved a remarkable sequence of events:

A molecular cloud collapsed under gravity.

The Sun and planets formed.

Earth developed a protective magnetic field.

A giant collision with Theia created the Moon and Earth's tilt.
