History of RAMAYANA.....

One of the two great epics of ancient India is the Ramayana; the other is the Mahabharata. Although the precise dates are unknown, it is credited to the sage Valmiki and is thought to have been written between 500 and 100 BCE. The epic is broken up into seven books, or Kandas, and has over 24,000 verses.

The account of Prince Rama of Ayodhya, who is banished from his realm because of a vow his father, King Dasharatha, made to his second wife, Kaikeyi, is told in the Ramayana. Along with Rama into exile are his obedient brother Lakshmana and his wife Sita. The demon king Ravana kidnaps Sita during their banishment and brings her to his realm in Lanka.

Rama sets out on a rescue expedition to Lanka with the aid of the monkey general Hanuman and the monkey king Sugriva and his army. After a protracted and difficult trip, Rama ultimately faces and vanquishes Ravana in a titanic battle, saving Sita in the process.

When Rama and Sita get back in Ayodhya, they are crowned king and queen. But when the people of Ayodhya begin to question Sita's chastity, Rama, unable to maintain his authority in the face of popular opinion, banishes Sita into the wilderness. Lava and Kusha, the twin sons of Rama born to Sita, grow up at the scholar Valmiki's hermitage.

Many years later, in an effort to establish his dominance over his realm, Rama chooses to carry out the ceremonial horse sacrifice known as the Ashwamedha Yagna. Lava and Kusha disclose their true selves to Rama by singing the tale of their father's adventures during the rite. Rama is ecstatic to see his sons again and is able to win Sita back to his side at last.

Rama's coronation as king of Ayodhya and his reunion with Sita mark the conclusion of the Ramayana. The epic is a profound philosophical and moral narrative that delves into issues of responsibility, honor, love, and the nature of good and evil, in addition to being a story of adventure and courage. It is still regarded as one of Indian literature's most significant and enduring pieces.
