Young Princess Leia Reportedly To Be In 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Series

How Could This Work?

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series was always bound to give us familiar faces. Given the title of the series, having Ewan McGregor back as Obi-Wan was a no-brainer. Eventually, it was officially announced that we would see the return of Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen), Beru Lars (Bonnie Piesse), and Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton). And fans have speculated that we may see a 10-year-old Luke Skywalker, which would make sense given that it is Kenobi's mission to watch over him. But what about a young Princess Leia Organa?

Recently, Cinelinx claimed to have an exclusive, saying that, based on word from multiple sources, we will see a 10-year-old Princess Leia in the upcoming miniseries, and that she would be portrayed by Vivien Lyra Blair. Perhaps not that familiar of a name, but she has appeared in several things, including the films Bird Box and We Can Be Heroes. But would a young Leia make sense to have on the show? Well, it might make more sense than one would expect.

Take for instance the fact that Kathleen Kennedy said Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader will be having a rematch. This has brought forth expectations that Kenobi could be going offworld, given that it would not make sense for Vader to be on Tatooine, where he might encounter a young Luke. We know that Kenobi's main mission is to watch over Luke, which is why many fans are so resistant to the idea of him going offworld. But if the other twin is in danger, that could be enough to push him to go offworld. Both of the twins are important to the fate of the galaxy, and if Bail Organa (whom we, as of now, do not know whether or not he may appear on the show) needs help saving his daughter, there is no doubt that he would try to recruit someone like Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Of course, there are details from A New Hope to keep in mind. Old Ben Kenobi tells Luke that he has not gone by the name Obi-Wan since before Luke was born. Star Wars Rebels remained consistent with this by having Ezra Bridger refer to him only as "Master Kenobi." So even in the presence of familiar characters, he cannot be referred to as Obi-Wan before the original trilogy. If he ends up in the presence of someone like Bail, maybe the senator would only refer to him as Ben in order to keep his identity on the down low. And in a rematch with Vader, maybe the Sith Lord would only refer to him as "my master" or "my former master," or something. Maybe they would not even exchange words at all, what with Vader probably still mad about Kenobi cutting off his limbs and leaving him to burn.

There is also the matter of Leia's message to Obi-Wan. The wording in the hologram message makes it seem like she and Obi-Wan have never met before. However, it is possible for Obi-Wan to save her without actually seeing her in person. It could be as simple as Leia being in a cell and Obi-Wan pressing a button elsewhere in the location that releases her, with others helping her escape while Kenobi deals with some other stuff at such a location. There are ways to work around what has been established without "breaking canon."

Ultimately, if this is indeed happening (which has not been officially confirmed), it would all come down to the execution. My parting words of wisdom to Lucasfilm and Disney would be to please not use a CGI face on the younger version of the character this time.
