You Promised Me Darkness #02

Behemoth Entertainment 2021

By Damian Connelly

Lettered by Anabella Mazzaferri

Yuko and Sebastian, two siblings with special abilities are constantly running from an evil being, known as the “Anti-everything”, who won’t stop until he feasts on them. A peculiar pythoness has predicted that this very encounter could trigger the end of the world. But Yuko and Sebastian won’t be alone in their battle as a mysterious group will soon arrive to aid.

I thinking the fact that this is in black & white works incredibly well with the type of story we’re seeing. That the comet came by and gave folks powers isn’t an unusual origin story but what is is the fact that we’re approaching the apocalypse and these folks have been divvied up in forces for good and evil. The concept is great and getting to see the characters as they are in the process of either being found or applying to be a part of something. I think how we see this all coming together is something rather quite special to actually see this happening. This is a mature readers title and that’s for its nudity but it’s so tastefully done and feels so natural to the character.

I love the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development is interesting as how we see the dialogue, the character interactions and how they act and react to the situations and circumstances flesh them out as people even further. The pacing here is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more characters as well as more and more of the story we’re drawn into this in some magnificent ways.

I am liking the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to grow, strengthen as well as having new ones emerge is infinitely fascinating. How we see the richness of this world continuing to emerge through the story and the characters is so well rendered here. The way we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is incredibly well achieved.

The interiors here really are bloody gorgeous. The black & white medium is the hardest to do in my opinion because it will show any and all imperfections. Thankfully there are none here and the work is so powerful in how the reader sees it. The linework we see with its varying weights bringing out the attention to detail is beautifully done. The way we see backgrounds and how they are working into the composition of the panels bringing us the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is magnificently rendered. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a spectacular masters eye for storytelling.

The story that brings us to an apocalypse is really something that we haven’t seen before as we usually get the event itself as the starting point of it’s well past and we see how those who survived are coping. So the originality of how this is being told and the ingenuity of creating these marvellously fleshed out characters with their own insecurities that we see shining through make them infinitely more likable. The writing for this is beyond what we could have hoped for and the fact that Damian does everything, but the lettering, means that everything we see is exactly what’s intended to get the maximum effect. This is a stunning book that is incredibly well told in every facet.
