Witchblood #7

Vault Comics 2021

Written by Matthew Erman

Illustrated by Lisa Sterle

Lettered by Andworld Design

"Let me not mar that perfect dream

By an auroral stain,

But so adjust my daily night

That it will come again."

On the surface it looks like it is too late but is it really? For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction, meaning there’s a way to fix this so the real question is who among them can come up with that answer. Yonna is the best chance there is and god help us all because she has no idea what to do at this moment. The events leave a chasm between the witch hunters, the vampires and Yonna as they all flee to go their separate ways. So this is what happens when you drink a god's blood, you become a god in your own right as you absorb powers and madness that amplify everything that is wrong with yourself. The way that thai story has kept building and how its gone from them seeking out witches blood to now this god’s blood has been a recipe for disaster from the start and when the girls had the chance they should’ve offed them all. But then we wouldn’t be where we are now and the story would be over.

I’m digging how this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development that we see through the narration, the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter is greatly rendered. This keeps the ever changing personalities at the forefront of the story. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story the more entranced by events we become.

I do like how we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen. These layers open up these avenues to be explored and while some will be and are started others won’t be and that’s okay because they all add this great depth, dimension and complexity to the story. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is extremely nice to see.

While I’m not the biggest fan of this style of work in general it has been growing on me a bit. That two panel that stretches across pages two and three has some great imagery to it. The linework is nicely laid down and how we see the detail within the work is achieved extremely well. The backgrounds that we see really do wonders in enhancing and expanding the moments while also working within the composition of the panels bringing out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a talented eye for storytelling. There are some beautiful colour choices being made and how we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work show a nice eye for how colour works.

This really does an exceptional job in taking a world where Vampires and Witches exist side by side and puts a new unique spin on how this works. Or doesn’t work depending on your point of view. It is original, creative and unique in the best of ways and with each issue just being that much stronger than the last has that kind of build up that we like seeing. This is extremely well written and has such great characterisation wrapped up in some nice visuals.
