As the web series industry continues to grow, more and more people are creating their own shows online. There are now so many that they even have their own festival: New York City’s Web Series Festival. You like watching Web series and spending your lot of time in this, you are not the only one doing this. But Why? In this article, we take a look at some of the negative effects that Web Series can have on your life.

Why We Should NOT Watch Web Series:

It all started with FRIENDS web series. People download it from illegal platforms like a torrent and watch the whole series in 2-3 days. In the last 3 years and the next 5 years, watching a web series online has and will become a trend!

Online media streaming platforms like Hotstar, Netflix, Amazon Prime and MX Player are growing super fast. They are providing ‘so-called’ high-quality content at the cheapest rate! Many online media streaming services promote pornography and nudity on their platform!

And that’s why the young generation is getting attracted to online media streaming. I want you to ask yourself these questions. Do you really feel amazing after watching a web series?

What did you learn from a web series?

How many hours have you wasted watching a web series?

Think this way!

You may have watched many web series till the day, but how do you get so much time to watch so many web series? If you have been utilizing your free time for consuming a lot of entertaining content and you have not focused on improving yourself, that would be difficult for you to get a job and your career.

Programming Yourself with Negativity

Just about every television show, from comedies to drama to reality Web and the news, is negative. If you look at almost any Web show there is a complete lack of positive redeeming messages. While there are exceptions to this rule they are few and far between, so choose carefully what you decide to spend your time watching.

Web series and movies Slows Down Your Brain Activity

There’s a reason why they coined the term “couch potato.” Excessive Web watching turns you into a potato in time. Research has shown that when you are watching, your higher brain regions shut down, and activities shift to the lower brain regions. Your lower brain is set in a “fight or flight” response mode. In the long run, your higher brain regions experience atrophy due to lack of usage. There have been studies that TV viewing among children leads to lower attention and poorer brain development.

At the end of the day, you don’t need a medical study to tell you whether Web slows down your brain or not. Since movies or web series is a 1-way medium, you don’t engage and interact. You only sit and watch. When I was watching Web series in the past, I would feel sluggish and inert. After a while, I would feel sleepy. Compare this with other activities say talking to a friend, using the computer, reading a book, or writing articles in which I am much more active. Imagine spending so much time in front of TV every day – it’s a matter of time before you turn into a zombie. It’s not a coincidence that heavy Web series watchers are also stagnant and passive people.

Build More Meaningful Relationships

Web is one of the favorite pastimes in families. They spend evenings in front of the phone or any digital screen, watching show after show. Even though everyone is sitting together in the same room, they aren’t bonding with each other. Each of them is just developing an isolated connection with whatever is on the screen.

Now, imagine if all this time is spent talking to each other. Say, asking how each other’s days were, understanding each other, discussing tomorrow’s plans, being a part of each other’s lives, just hanging out. Isn’t that a more meaningful way to connect? Why build a connection with the television and characters on screen when you can be building a connection with real people? Web shows might be a proxy to bond with each other, but it’s clearly more fruitful to bond with each other directly. I definitely find the latter more meaningful than the former.

Occasionally, my friends and I will have sleepovers at each others’ houses. Whenever the phone is switched on, everyone gets glued to the show that’s airing, and no one ever talks. Then after say, 2-3 hours of watching, the night is over and it’s time to go to bed. Compare this to when we spend the 2 hours catching up. Suddenly, we gain new levels of understanding about each other. It’s a lot more rewarding than watching Web series

Don’t you have goals, dreams a nd ambition?

Come on everyone has!

How can you become so careless?

Generally, people who used to watch web series are between 18-25 years old in India, America, UK and in the rest of the world. The golden period when you can achieve anything you want by working hard! I am telling the truth which I have observed! Look, all the companies which are providing content are doing business, right? They know you will spend more time on watching shows online and that’s what they want.

Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar are here to make profits. They don’t care about your life and career, obviously. They will always try continuously to make you addicted. It’s fine to watch for entertainment. But, it should not become a HOBBY! After reading this article, you may disagree with my opinion. Leave your opinion in the comment area.

In Conclusion

If you love watching web series, you’re definitely not alone. They’re very popular and have helped many people cure their boredom over the past few years. However, the web series format isn’t without its drawbacks. It can lead to exhaustion, stress, and even stereotyping and discrimination of both viewers and creators alike.
