Why We Hate Rachel Greene

The Problem with Rachel

Friends is one of the most watched shows of all time and as such sparks a lot of debate among both casual watchers and fans. One of the ongoing commentaries is just how much the internet hates Ross Geller. I come to bring a very controversial stance. Ross Geller was a terrible partner, to every woman he ever dated. But he was a good person. He leant Monica money when she needed it, he bought Phoebe her first bike and taught her how to ride it and he gave up a career changing opportunity to help Rachel when he didn’t have to. That said Rachel was a bad partner and a bad person. I am here with an entire article on why Rachel was actually the worst Friend.

We are going to start at season 1 and just work our way through her stupidity. First of all let's start with the fact that she kind of just declared that she was living with Monica…a high school friend that she didn’t invite to her wedding. It was a joke that was brushed off but, you don’t invite someone to your wedding and expect them to let you live with them after calling off said wedding? Mkay.

So starting pretty early we have the time she agreed to watch Marcel for Ross and then lost him. “Oh but Marcel ran away”...because she left the door open when she left the room. Now I truly hate it when people compare animals to kids but if you leave the room while they're just roaming around and you leave the door open we have a problem. She was careless and selfish like she is and Marcel got away and then like a dumbass she calls animal control which you only call if you have an animal problem not a lost animal. Truly a stupid ass move.

Everyone always goes off on how Ross was in their relationship and he was terrible but so was she. He verbalized that he was jealous and why and she essentially told him to get over it. She knew exactly who made him insecure and she insisted on hanging out with this man alone. And let's not pretend that Ross had no reason to be jealous. When she got her new job she hugged Mark before she hugged her boyfriend, Mark was in fact interested in her and did in fact ask her out after her and Ross broke up. He had every reason to be insecure and she made it worse at every turn. And then there's the fact that she decided that her job was more important than her relationship.

The time she snaked Van Dam from Monica. Monica had a thing for him and despite that she decided to date him. That’s just bitchy and against girl code 101. And then she had the audacity to be pissy when Monica is mad about it.

Next we’ve got her lying to her dad about how Ross reacted to her being pregnant. Literally his first reaction after getting over the shock was “we should probably get married” and she told her father that Ross said that she’s damaged goods. She lets her father think Ross is the problem when the problem is that Rachel is a little bitch who can’t stand up to her father.

Then we have the fact that she flew to London with the intention of breaking up his wedding and though he might have blown that one up himself she still made the choice to go on his honeymoon with him after the wedding blew up. That’s creepy and a little predatory considering that Ross was extremely vulnerable.

Talking Bonnie into shaving her head because she doesn’t want her dating ross.

The episode where they are all getting ready for Ross’ museum benefit and she refuses to do so in a timely manner and then gets petty and bitchy when he tells her to hurry the fuck up.

Rachel Greene is the most selfish, self-centered, bitchy character in friends. Does Ross suck? Absolutely but they were a very toxic duo because Rachel sucked too. Arguably more so because again Ross was a bad partner but a good friend. Rachel was a bad partner and a bad person.

Alexandrea, I'm actually rewatching Friends right now (for the nth time) and I can't help but see your point of view. I don't hate her character, but you have a point! :)

It offers an alternative viewpoint on Rachel's character, challenging the perception that she was the more likable or virtuous of the two in her relationship with Ross.
