Why Kamala Khan Will Probably Be In Danger In 'The Marvels'

After what feels like a long wait, the first teaser trailer for The Marvels, a sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel, has dropped. The film, set to be released on November 10, 2023, will see the powers of Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan become cosmically entwined, causing them to switch places whenever they use them, thus forcing the trio to work together until the issue is resolved.

After viewing the trailer, some fans have become concerned for Kamala, aka Ms. Marvel, the youngest member of the trio. There are a couple of reasons why this might be.

Kamala is the least experienced of the Marvels

In the MCU timeline, Carol has had her powers for a few decades at this point, and while Monica's abilities were a recent development when we last saw her in WandaVision, she appears to have mastered them by the time The Marvels takes place. Kamala, on the other hand, is still a novice when it comes to her powers.

Per the new trailer, The Marvels plot seems to pick up around the same time as Ms. Marvel's post credits sequence, which sees Kamala and Carol switch places, with Carol appearing in Kamala's bedroom. While Kamala has a decent handle on her abilities by the end of that series, she has had them for a few months at most, and is still learning what she can do with them, so it is hard to say she has mastered them entirely. This puts her at a clear disadvantage when switching places with her more experienced counterparts, as seen in the trailer when she panics after taking Monica's place in space, or needing to be rescued by Goose the Flerken after switching places with Carol, who had been in the middle of a battle on a Kree ship.

The main villain of The Marvels is believed to be Dar-Benn, Kree Warrior played by Zawe Ashton. Aside from wielding the hammer of a Kree Accuser, possibly linking her to Ronan the Accuser of the first film and Guardians of the Galaxy, eagle-eyed fans have spotted a shot in which Dar-Benn appears to be wearing a bangle, similar to the one which grants Kamala her hard-light powers.

One of the key conflicts of the Ms. Marvel series is Kamala's discovery of Clandestine/Djinn heritage through her Great Grandmother, Aisha, followed by the reveal that the other surviving Clandestines wish to steal her bangle to return to their home dimension, a process that would likely destroy Earth.

Dar-Benn's bangle has led fans to believe that the Kree Warrior also wants Kamala's bangle for her own, thereby placing a target on Ms. Marvel's back.

But don't worry too much.. chances are, everything will turn out fine

Kamala, as Ms. Marvel, is a relatively new addition to the MCU. There is plenty to be explored with her, and she is important to the future for a number of reasons. As the MCU's first official Mutant, Kamala may pave the way for the entrance of other mutant characters, and as one of the MCU's growing crop of young, next generation heroes, she will probably be a prominent figure in whatever Young Avengers/Champions line up eventually emerges.

So, while Kamala may have some things to worry about in The Marvels, it is unlikely anything too terrible is going to happen to her. The more likely scenario is that the need to possibly protect Kamala from Dar-Benn will be part of what draws the three Marvels together, and mentoring their new younger teammate may help heal the rift that has clearly formed between Carol and Monica since the first Captain Marvel film.

Whatever happens, it will be very interesting to see how these three work together when The Marvels hits the big screen in November.
